Summary
This is a fantastic opportunity to help build a new team for the existing facility and the new state-of-the-art facility from the ground up. The new Speros campus will have a 30,000 sqft Comparative Medicine state-of-the-art Facility, which will complement MCC’s existing, fully accredited 28,000 sqft facility.
Position Highlights:
Moffitt is building a new Comparative Medicine Core (CMC) and is seeking a Senior Education and Quality Assurance (QA) Specialist of Technical Services to collaborate with Husbandry Operations leadership to develop training modules for husbandry, veterinary, and research staff. Provides basic rodent training, and technical services (including breeding colony management common injections, and dosing techniques) for staff at all levels. The Senior Education and QA Specialist of Surgical Services will perform various quality assurance assessments of the comparative medicine core program including audits of training and process and post-approval monitoring as well as developing educational and institutional programs relating to the responsibilities of the research community.
The Ideal Candidate:
Must have experience in laboratory animal care, facilities operations/management, biohazard containment, and data management. Must have experience performing technical and surgical procedures in mice. Must have experience creating and assisting in developing plans to enhance the learning and performance of the staff. Experience in quality assurance (QA) /regulatory experience including oversight of audits is required. Knowledge of adult learning principles is preferred.
Responsibilities:
Creates and provides formal and informal training and consultation, including orientations, training, and development and implementation of standard operating processes and procedures related to the use of animals. Conducts regular audits and assessments of Comparative Medicine Staff and Research staff activities to ensure proper quality control and identify the areas needing improvement and potential compliance risks. Maintains tracking and reporting on observed quality and compliance trends within the animal care & welfare programs, including oversight of the development and maintenance of work instructions/standard operating procedures and proposed changes to current practices and policies as needed. Other duties include backing up other Education and Quality Assurance Specialist. Provides training to veterinary technicians and research staff in survival surgical methods, including but not limited to: orthotopic injections, stereotaxic injections, implants and surgery, ovarian xenografts, jugular catheter placement and injections, tumor biopsy. Provides training to veterinary technicians and research staff on specific injections and tissue collections including but not limited to tail vein, cardiac, retroorbital, tongue/buccal, bone marrow collection, CSF collection. Develops and refines their proficiency as a trainer, advance their surgical skills and expand their expertise in perioperative procedures (e.g. anesthesia, pain assessments, aseptic technique). Provides ultrasound training for veterinary technicians, SAIL staff and researchers to measure tumor sizes. Develops a training including inanimate models for imaging and live animals with tumors Performs basic major surgical procedures for surgical training or refinement/development purposes and executes all related surgical tasks such as pre-operative health assessment, providing safe and effective anesthesia, administering and recording correct dosage of medications, monitoring intra-operative vitals, ensuring successful anesthetic recovery. Additionally, maintains accurate, consistent, and complete surgical documentation. Collaborates with research staff to develop new surgical techniques to support Cancer research.
Credentials and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in animal science, biological science, educational science, or related field is required along with six (6) years of rodent research surgical experience in animal-based research.
