Senior Engineer, Data Center Operations
Overview Job Purpose The Senior Data Center Operations Engineer (SDCOE) is primarily responsible in ensuring that all activities carried out in the Data Center & Access Center’s conform to Data Center Procedures and industry best practice. The SDCOE will carry out Data Center works as directed, these works could be project based or tasks received via incident management or workflow management tools. In all cases the SDCOE will ensure that Change Control rules are followed and support documentation is appropriate and correct. The role will also be responsible for advising and instructing Operations Engineers as required and offering guidance on installation practices and fault finding as needed, on site management of colocation clients and third parties, ensuing security process is followed and maintained, ensuring all work activity is captured and updates entered into the Data Center management tool, or into the workflow management/incident management tool, Service Now. The SDCOE will also support and execute Data Center capacity management for cables and hardware on behalf of the Data Center Engineering & Operations team such that each item is recorded in a central database/spreadsheet with details on configuration item type (e.g. hardware manufacturer, model, specification), location, associated project, purchase order and total number of items available. This will be done for ICE and ICE colocation customers. Responsibilities Support the Data Center Engineers and act as an escalation point for the Team Maintain access control lists and check access reports daily Maintain the ‘process and procedure’ documentation relating to all aspects of data Center operations Ensure up to date shift logs are kept at all times To provide holiday and sickness cover at short notice and be flexible in their working patterns to maintain SLA’s Installation, relocation and recovery of Network, Server and Storage hardware to manufacturer standards and industry best practice. Repair of hardware to major component level (e.g. hard disk, NIC card, memory) across a broad range of vendor equipment. Execution of all work to Data Center work process & procedure. Manage the goods in/out process for individual site storage facility and keep full records as directed for all incoming/outgoing assets and a full availability list of all items in storage. Manage asset record updates, tracking and placing assets as to their location and status (deployed, ceased etc.). Carry out daily checks to ensure security and access policies are being adhered to and Data Center cleanliness is maintained. Ensure recorded details of all hardware installations, moves or changes are correct. Ensure that all records are updated following any installations, moves or changes Control Data Center stocks (copper/fibre patch leads, patch panels, connectors etc.) and report appropriately. Regularly audit the Data Centers & Data Center records Produce reports on Daily & Monthly activity Knowledge and Experience Experience supervising a team of Data Center Engineers Pro-active and flexible with ability to work either as part of a team or as an individual Effective written and verbal communication at all levels Experience of hardware manufacturer installation standards and knowledge of copper and fibre cabling installations and standards, with preference given to the following qualifications; Certified Data Center Technician CDCTP HP Accredited Platform Specialist Systimax Installation & Maintenance ND3361 Corning NPI Membership 5+ years’ experience working in Data Center environments Basic network knowledge and good experience of a broad range of IT hardware; HP, Dell, Nokia, Ciena, Cisco, Juniper and Arista. Understanding of IP networks Experience of working in an ITIL controlled environment with knowledge of Change Control, Incident Management & Problem Management processes.
