Senior Engineer - Surface Water
OVERVIEW Merrick is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Civil Engineer with expertise in surface water engineering to join our dynamic Infrastructure team in our Colorado, Idaho, or Georgia offices. The ideal candidate will have extensive design and construction experience in river engineering, hydrology, open channel and storm sewer hydraulics, stream restoration, scour, armoring and erosion control, sediment transport, floodplain management, storm sewer infrastructure, detention facilities, and stormwater quality. WHAT YOU'LL DO Technical Lead in support of the Project Manager for surface water engineering projects, primarily focusing on river and stream restoration, stormwater infrastructure, and floodplain management. Conduct hydraulic and hydrologic modeling to support project designs and regulatory compliance. Develop conceptual and detailed designs for river stabilization, river recreation, and stormwater management solutions. Prepare proposals, change orders, feasibility studies, technical reports, design and construction plans, technical specifications, and cost estimates. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams that typically include planners, landscape architects, geotechnical engineers, geomorphologists, permitting specialists, surveyors, environmental scientists, to develop innovative solutions for complex projects. Successfully interact and communicate with both internal and external clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders and assist the Project Manager in successfully achieving the goals, objectives, and regulatory requirements for the project. Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and support staff. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, water resource engineering, or other related field. Professional Engineer (PE) license required. Minimum twelve (12) years of experience in surface water engineering, with a focus on river systems and stormwater management. Proficiency in hydraulic and hydrologic modeling software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, SRH-2D, CFD/3D hydraulic modeling, or similar tools. Strong understanding of hydrology, open channel and storm sewer hydraulics, erosion, sediment transport dynamics, floodplain regulations, and stormwater quality practices. Experience with GIS and CAD-based software for analysis and design. Previous experience in preparation of design and construction documents including technical specifications. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Passion for outdoor recreation and an understanding of river safety, whitewater dynamics, and recreational river use is a plus. Ability to work in one of our office locations in Colorado (Denver, Greenwood Village, Loveland, Colorado Springs); Idaho (Boise, Coeur d’Alene, McCall, Lewiston); or Georgia (Chamblee/Atlanta). Valid driver's license, a good driving record required and must be insurable. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field Construction oversight experience on large-scale river restoration and/or stormwater management projects Experience working with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies. Familiarity with design and construction of river health and stabilization features. Knowledge of ecological restoration techniques and natural channel design principles.
