GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Estimator/Senior Estimator will be responsible for bidding jobs/projects for our asphalt construction business. This position will work closely with customers and internal departments for accurate cost estimating. The ideal candidate must possess a thorough working knowledge of heavy civil construction, roadway construction, and VDOT and Municipality related construction. This position requires the candidate to be self-motivated and well organized. The ideal candidate must be willing to work in both the office and the field to gain a full understanding of the work that they are estimating. This position is located in Roanoke, VA. This is not a remote position.
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

o Performing quantity take-offs, pricing, scoping and bidding of construction projects.
o Visiting the project site to develop a thorough understanding of the site conditions.
o Responsible for gathering information related to asphalt, paving, and other materials needed to
complete the project.
o Develop a clear understanding of the project specifications and bidding requirements.
o Compose and manage both verbal and written clarification correspondence with the client.
o Identifying constructability issues through the estimating process.
o Identifying value-engineering alternatives and other opportunities to gain a competitive
advantage.
o Assess site risks and develop plans to mitigate.
o Review estimates with project managers, superintendents and other estimators to ensure
project costs are accurately captured in the estimate.
o Prepare detailed proposals and bid packages for submission to clients.
o Present estimate and participate in bid reviews with the Estimating Team and/or senior
management to ensure accuracy and completeness.
o Assure compliance with MBE/DBE and/or SWAM requirements of contract in bid process. Assure that all appropriate subcontractors have been solicited.
o Work with various internal team members for project setup and project completion
o Prepare preliminary pre-bid schedules
o Issue subcontractor award notices or letters of intent
o Coordinate successful bid hand-offs to project management and job supervisory team
o Complete all forms/paperwork required by VDOT/Municipal contracts
o Coordinate project billing based on contract specs
o Communicate with project management throughout life of project to track estimated versus
actual costs
o Study ongoing and historical job performance to assist with accurate pricing in the future
QUALIFICATIONS:
o College degree is preferred.
o 5+ years estimating and highway construction experience is strongly preferred.
o Strong organizational skills are required; the ability to track and meet all deadlines related to
bids and project submittal requirements.
o Knowledge of working with contracts/VDOT is preferred.
o Must be able to maintain customer relationships in a positive manner.
o Must have strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with project managers and crew
superintendents.
o Must demonstrate analytical and systematic thinking.
o Valid Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record is required.
