Job Description:
Are you looking to "break in" to a career with the Salt Lake City Police Department? SLCPD is looking for a new Evidence Technician! As an Evidence Technician, you'll be responsible for securing, storing, tracking and disposing of property and seized evidence. At higher levels, candidates would be responsible for training other department staff on proper evidence handling procedures and assisting with developing and maintaining unit and department policies.
About the Position:
Highly qualified applicants with six (6) or more years as a full-time Evidence Technician and a certification as a Property and Evidence Specialist through IAPE may be brought in at the Senior Evidence Technician level, but all candidates with a high school diploma (or equivalent) and two (2) or more years of experience in a clerical, customer service, or support staff position involving filing, record keeping, warehousing, and data entry/retrieval are encouraged to apply! Successful candidates will have experience in computerized tracking systems.
The hours for this position are 40 hours per week. This position is not eligible for remote work.

About the Team:
The Salt Lake City Police Department's Evidence Unit has a team of six technicians and one supervisor. The unit is part of the department’s Forensic Services and is adjacent to the Crime Lab. You'll work closely with police officers and detectives, as well as forensic scientists, crime scene technicians, and other evidence technicians to keep our well-oiled machine running.

Position Salary Range:
Level I: $20.32 - $25.18/hr*
Level II: $23.42 - $29.00/hr*
Senior Level: $25.69 - $31.82/hr*

Key Responsibilities:
+ Responsible for receiving, sorting, transporting, and securing all seized evidence and property submitted to the Salt Lake City Police Department evidence intake rooms.
+ Accountable for the security and integrity of the evidence warehouse and all items maintained within.
+ Verifies property reports against NCIC database for lost and stolen items.
+ Responsible for the tracking of all evidence items released or transferred for review, forensic testing, and court proceedings, following strict departmental procedures regarding evidence storage and disposition, while ensuring the chain of custody is maintained and accurately documented.
+ Determines appropriate and lawful disposition of property through disposal, destruction, donation, auction or releasing to the owner.
+ Performs a complex mix of clerical duties utilizing knowledge of department systems, operational procedures and specialized equipment.
+ Conducts periodic audits of property inventory.
+ Instructs department personnel on evidentiary policies and procedures.
+ Maintains a stock of packaging supplies for department staff.
+ Operates a forklift and stock picker to retrieve and relocate property as necessary.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Level I:
+ High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent AND two (2) years’ work experience in a clerical, customer service, or support staff position involving tasks such as filing, record keeping, warehousing, and data entry and retrieval on a computerized tracking system or related education can be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
+ Experience working for the Salt Lake City Police Department or other law enforcement agency is preferred.
+ Ability to satisfactorily complete on-the-job training in evidentiary procedures within 6 months.
+ Ability to operate computers, computer programs, standard office equipment and other specified technical equipment as assigned.
+ Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with department management, supervisors, professional peers, other employees, and the general public.
+ Must have a valid driver’s license or driving privilege card, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
+ Ability to obtain a forklift driver’s certification.
+ Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a drug screen.
Level II:
+ Full-time experience as an Evidence Technician I with the Salt Lake City Police Department or other law enforcement agency for a minimum of three (3) years.
+ Certification as a Property and Evidence Specialist through the International Association for Property and Evidence (IAPE).
+ Ability to operate modern computers, computer programs, standard office equipment and other specified technical equipment as assigned.
+ Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with department management, supervisors, professional peers, other employees, and the general public.
+ Ability to train police officers, department employees and members of other agencies on Salt Lake City Police Department evidence policies and procedures.
+ Possession of a valid driver’s license or driving privilege card.
+ Ability to obtain a forklift driver’s certification.
Senior Level:
+ Full-time experience as an Evidence Technician II with the Salt Lake City Police Department or other law enforcement agency for a minimum of three (3) years.
+ Certification as a Property and Evidence Specialist through the International Association for Property and Evidence (IAPE).
+ Ability to operate modern computers, computer programs, standard office equipment and other specified technical equipment as assigned.
+ Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with department management, supervisors, professional peers, other employees, and the general public.
+ Ability to train police officers, department employees and members of other agencies on Salt Lake City Police Department evidence policies and procedures.
+ Possession of a valid driver’s license or driving privilege card.
+ Ability to obtain a forklift driver’s certification.
Working Conditions:
+ Exposure to disagreeable elements such as noxious fumes, human excrement, drugs, dirt, dust, and insects. May be required to handle bio-hazardous materials such as HIV infected blood samples, clothing, and syringes.
+ Frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling of moderately heavy weights.
+ Exposure to stressful situations as a result of human behavior.
