This role aims to turn SIGs development of high-quality, food-safe, and sustainable packaging solutions into a more customer- and product-centric direction. Value driver are scientific innovations about key product characteristics (e.g. shelf-life), impacted by food-packaging interactions which drive product performance and regulatory compliance. The acquired innovations will substantiate the differentiating superiority of SIG packaging solutions and therefore directly contribute to the SIG business targets. Without this position, SIG and its customers would face increased risks of reduced product quality, compromised food safety, and missed opportunities for innovation in sustainable and aseptic packaging solutions, ultimately impacting market competitiveness and brand trust.

 

Key responsibilities

 

Food Science Integration in R&D - Identify most relevant and impactful test setups to drive shelflife optimization, develop and implement methods, including material-product-compatibility testing, barrier property assessments, predictive shelf-life modeling and/or real-time quality monitoring. Packaging Innovation - Initiate developments of new packaging solutions based on scientific data while assuring regulatory & compliance, sustainability and hygienic & aseptic design principles. Customer-Centric Solution Development – Work closely with SIG customers to develop tailored packaging solutions that enhance product quality, extend shelf life, and support brand differentiation. Cross-Functional Collaboration – Coordinate with R&D, quality, and regulatory teams to integrate new materials, testing methodologies, and innovations that improve the interaction between packaging and food products. Digital Data Utilization for Packaging & Food Quality – Develop and implement digital solutions to collect, analyze, and document key data from packaging materials and food products, enabling improved decision-making, traceability, and quality control. Sustainability & Recycling Strategies – Drive the development of recyclable and environmentally friendly packaging solutions by optimizing material selection, enhancing circular economy approaches, and ensuring compliance with evolving sustainability regulations.

 

You bring these skills, experience & education Master’s degree in Food Science, Packaging Technology, Material Science, Chemistry or related field (PhD preferred) Relevant experience in the food or packaging industry, with strong focus on food-packaging interaction and regulatory compliance Deep understanding of shelf-life modeling, barrier performance, and product/package compatibility testing Proven knowledge of international food safety and packaging regulations (e.g. FDA, EFSA, EU) Aseptic and hygienic processing knowledge Strong analytical skills and hands-on experience with lab-based testing and quality assessment methods Track record in driving scientific innovation into commercial packaging solutions Customer-oriented mindset with experience in co-developing solutions with external partners Strong cross-functional collaboration and project management capabilities Familiarity with digital tools and data analysis for food and packaging quality monitoring Excellent communication and influencing skills in English (German language a plus)   SIG competencies
