Ford Model E is responsible for developing the key technologies and capabilities – such as EV platforms, batteries, e-motors, inverters, charging and recycling – to create ground-up, breakthrough electric vehicles. The Senior Exterior Systems Engineer will be responsible for designing, prototyping, validating, and releasing systems and components for advanced EV vehicle programs. The engineer will work closely with studio designers to develop new design concepts and collaborate with other vehicle engineering teams and cross-functional teams on technical, feasibility, and cost trade-off studies. The engineer will explore creative ideas covering a variety of systems, including fascia, rocker, aero shields, and other trims, as well as front and rear end structures and component integrations, glazing, and wiper/washer systems, to celebrate engineering and aesthetics design possibilities, from the concept phase all the way to manufacturing and quality teams for the launch.
The minimum requirements we seek:
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field 2+ years of experience working on production vehicle development and launch 4+ years of experience utilizing CAD (3DX, Catia, NX) collaboratively, 3DX and CATIA preferred 4+ years of experience in exterior systems design, development, release for one of more exterior systems, including trims, glazing, wiper/washer, front end module, structures, etc.Our preferred requirements:
Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, with preferred to have experience designing mechanisms, electromechanical components Strong understanding of the materials and manufacturing processes such as stamping, injection molding, casting, composites, paint and other surface finishes Strong Understanding of differences in design and engineering based on production volume and functional and cosmetic features Strong familiarity with legislative requirements affecting the design feasibility Strong understanding of GD&T, craftsmanship and CMF and how design execution would be affected Experience in working on automotive Class A surface feasibility assessment and development, vehicle layout/package, including body structures, exteriors, closures, glazing Hands-on experience in building and launching automotive productsWhat you’ll receive in return:

What you’ll be able to do:
Integrate technical, feasibility, manufacturing, and program requirements into the exterior design and theme development from concept through final production release Transfer engineering and key regulatory requirements to design, provide feasibility and technical input, and provide limitations feedback Package exterior systems and components within the vehicle architecture following Class A surface and design directions Generate concept alternatives and feasible solutions for technically challenging areas in design with functional and program assumptions Own CAD and BOM for systems and components, deliver system and component design including surface development, structures, datum strategy, attachments, and GD&T Interpret aerodynamics and CAE simulation, test results, integrate recommendations into exterior design Collaborate with cross-functional teams within engineering, manufacturing, and purchasing to ensure system manufacturing, assembly feasibility, and serviceability. Support vehicle development milestones and prototype/production build events
