Senior Geologist – Project Manager

Tetra Tech’s Hampton Roads office located in Virginia Beach, VA is seeking a Professional Geologist/Project Manager (PM) with at least 10 years’ experience in environmental and remediation-related projects to provide senior-level technical support and project management on environmental characterization and remediation projects for federal, municipal, commercial, and industrial clients. This individual will manage the scoping, planning and execution of large, complex environmental investigation programs under CERCLA, RCRA, TSCA and other regulatory programs for Federal, State, and private clients.

Responsibilities:  The candidate will be responsible for a variety of program and project related tasks to implement complex field investigation and remediation projects under various environmental regulatory programs for both government and private clients. These projects will include multimedia sampling, interpretation of data and designing integrated active and institutional remediation programs. Additional essential duties include:

•    Provide geology and hydrogeology interpretation to support CERCLA and RCRA investigations.
•    Lead tasks involving geologic/contaminant investigations and remediation projects.
•    Assume supporting technical role for projects and/or programs.
•    Write or lead teams in preparing complex reports.
•    Evaluate geologic/lithologic field information and prepare technical and graphical representations for reports.
•    Interpret project needs based on regulatory requirements, developing project parameters for environmental investigation and remediation project execution, setting milestone schedules, and tracking progress. 
•    Manage a multi-faceted team in the development of reports and decision documents for investigation and remediation of hazardous waste sites. This could include oversight of staff developing Work Plans, HASPs, SAPs, QAPPs, reports, and more. 
•    Develop and implement procedures for planning, design, and task management to meet project objectives.
•    Manage project financials including all aspects of budgets, costs, and contingencies.
•    Provide project-level financial progress reports.
•    Manage multiple, concurrent projects, from project development through completion to meet client objectives.
•    Prepare and monitor scopes, schedules, and budgets as necessary for all projects.
•    Identify and allocate appropriate resources for execution of individual projects.
•    Identify and implement effective systems and/or software for project success, including project management information systems, data and document management systems, relevant soil/groundwater/surface water visualization and modeling tools, etc.
•    Assist clients with strategic planning for prioritization of projects.
•    Assist in regulatory relations, negotiations, conducting and leading meetings, and routine reporting.
•    Develop and manage relationships to facilitate the successful delivery of the projects.
•    Provide proper implementation of risk management procedures.
•    Prepare and present routine program progress status reports and presentations to multiple stakeholders.
•    Provide mentorship of program team staff to support the growth of individuals in support of successful delivery of projects.
•    Monitor Health and Safety aspects of projects and recommend changes as necessary.
•    Monitor Quality Assurance procedures and recommend necessary changes.
•    Monitor and resolve construction related issues, disputes, and disagreements.

Qualifications & Requirements:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. •    Registered Professional Geologist (PG).  
•    Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is a plus.
•    40-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER training and current 8-hour refresher training is preferred. Other OSHA training (10 hour or 30-hour Construction) is desirable.
•    Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
•    Proficiency delivering technical and business presentations.
•    Successful past performance directing and supervising subcontractors. 
•    Proven track record of successfully bringing in and executing profitable assignments for clients and building key target client accounts.

This position requires the candidate to be a U.S. Citizen due to the projects they will be working on.

Education & Experience:  
•    Bachelor’s degree (BS) in geology or related environmental field required, Master’s degree (MS/MA) and/or geology-related academic experience is preferred
•    A minimum of 10 years of years directly related professional experience and/or training in environmental geosciences-related work (advanced degree may serve as 2 years of experience).
•    Candidates must be highly motivated, self-starters that want to further a career in environmental consulting.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Candidate may supervise other geologists and/or environmental scientists, or engineers assigned to projects. Candidate may supervise and direct field, drafting and design personnel. The direct management of projects is required.

There will be occasions for site visits, field measurements, and to attend meetings. Most “on-site” activities will be three days or less in duration. There may be occasions to travel to more remote sites within the United States. These trips normally have a duration of less than one week and are not frequent. The ability to support clientele for extended durations (more than one week), would be discussed with the successful candidate if feasible.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level is usually moderate in the primary work environment i.e., a typical business office with computers, printers, and light pedestrian traffic. When performing field work, the employee may be near moving equipment and/or machinery and may be subject to a range of weather conditions in those areas. Occasionally, work assignments will require the employee to travel via vehicle or aircraft.

•    Must be fluent in the English language – writing, reading, and speaking.
•    Must have a high level of written and oral communication skills and the ability to work and collaborate with employees at all levels and disciplines.  
•    The Senior Geologist/PM will have the ability to succeed in a team-oriented organization interfacing with a variety of diverse groups to accomplish project objectives.  
•    Successful candidate must possess effective communication skills, both orally and in written form. 
•    Ability to effectively present information, communicate, and respond to questions.  
•    Ability to read, research, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical documents and procedures, and government regulations.  
•    Ability to write detailed reports, business correspondence, and SOPs procedures.  
•    The successful candidate must have the ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints and the ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on controversial or complex topics.  

Mathematical Skills:.  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Other mathematical skills required to perform technical analysis in conjunction with their technical specialization. Ability to read and interpret financial documents and work with all mathematical concepts

Other Skills: Excellent computer skills are essential. Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, GIS (as needed for data interpretation), Adobe and other desktop publishing software packages as required to prepare the requirement documents associated with this technical discipline.
