Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

The team

The Geotechnical team at Tanami is diverse, have a positive culture, and works as a team. The Tanami Expansion Project which includes a new shaft and underground infrastructure, and the increasing depth of mining provides for an interesting and challenging Geotechnical environment. The team is well resourced and have a good range of experience levels and skill-sets on site. The Geotechnical teams within the Newmont organisation interacts actively and knowledge/experiences are widely shared.

The role Reporting to the Geotechnical Superintendent and working with the team, establish and implement the Geotechnical standards and procedures for the Tanami Operations;Provide leadership and input into geotechnical aspects of all functions within Technical Services, Geology Projects and Operations on site;Provide leadership and input into the geotechnical aspects of the TE2 Expansion project;Maintain the Ground Control Management Plan, Ground Support Standards, Data Collection, QA/QC and Ground Monitoring systems;Supervises and leads the Geotechnical Engineers, Technicians and Graduates, with a strong emphasis on building a positive culture, meeting targets for objectives and projects, and providing mentoring to junior team members;Actively participates in mine planning activities;Prepares reports and maintain records as required;Build positive relationships and work closely with all stakeholders;Provides Geotechnical input into the Business Plan and approves short to medium term plans.The person Tertiary qualifications in Science, Engineering or Geology with geo-mechanical subjects or a geotechnical upgrade to the degree;Strong knowledge of Deswik, Seismic software (IMS or Mx-Rap), Rocscience (Dips, Unwedge, Phases) and Map 3D software. Good skills in Flac-3D and Maptek PointStudio will be advantageous but not compulsory.At least 7 years geotechnical related experience;A minimum of 6 years’ experience in underground mining, predominantly in geotechnical engineering and preferably including some operational experience; andDemonstrated experience leading a team.Working Conditions

Working a roster, you can FIFO from Darwin, Alice Springs, Brisbane or Perth and reside in our fully equipped accommodation village with modern leisure facilities.
