Position Description:

As a Lead Infrastructure Engineer within our Space, Defence and Intelligence business, you will support high-performing environments that directly support the future of vital national services. This is an opportunity to take ownership of complex challenges, guide a talented team, and develop creative technical solutions that keep pace with evolving programme needs. Supported by a collaborative, expert community, you’ll play a pivotal role in delivering infrastructure excellence that enables our clients to achieve lasting impact.

CGI was recognised in the Sunday Times Best Places to Work List 2025 and has been named a UK ‘Best Employer’ by the Financial Times. We offer a competitive salary, excellent pension, private healthcare, plus a share scheme (3.5% + 3.5% matching) which makes you a CGI Partner not just an employee. We are committed to inclusivity, building a genuinely diverse community of tech talent and inspiring everyone to pursue careers in our sector, including our Armed Forces, and are proud to hold a Gold Award in recognition of our support of the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant. Join us and you’ll be part of an open, friendly community of experts. We’ll train and support you in taking your career wherever you want it to go.

Due to the secure nature of the programme, you will need to hold UK Security Clearance or be eligible to go through this clearance. This is a hybrid position.

Your future duties and responsibilities:

In this role, you will provide technical leadership across the day-to-day delivery, governance and operational integrity of the Windows infrastructure estate within the programme. You will guide a small team of engineers through complex technical activities, steer incident and change management processes, and ensure environments remain resilient, secure and compliant. You will take ownership of high-priority issues, drive technical improvements, and represent the infrastructure workstream across programme-level governance forums.

You will balance hands-on engineering with technical direction-setting, contributing directly to platform stability while helping build team capability and enabling creative approaches to emerging infrastructure needs. Supported by CGI’s collaborative community, you will help shape a stable, scalable and future-ready service for our client.

Key responsibilities include:

Oversee BAU technical delivery including patching, backups, configuration changes and service availability.

Provide technical leadership during major incidents, owning high-priority issues through to resolution.

Plan & prioritise technical workload, promoting knowledge sharing, cross-skilling and engineering capability growth.

Represent technical infrastructure interests in change boards, architecture reviews and governance forums.

Maintain adherence to change, incident and documentation processes in line with CGI and client standards.

Provide technical direction for new initiatives, balancing operational continuity with evolving programme needs.

Contribute hands-on across technologies such as VMware, Hyper-V, SQL, CI/CD pipelines, PowerShell and Bash.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role:

To succeed in this role, you will bring strong experience in infrastructure operations, leadership within technical teams, and a proven ability to manage complex, multi-environment estates. You will be confident navigating incident, change and governance processes while delivering hands-on engineering expertise.

You should have:

Extensive experience supporting and leading Windows-based infrastructure estates.

Strong technical capability across VMware, Hyper-V, SQL and automation tooling.

Proficiency in scripting (PowerShell and/or Bash).

Proven experience leading incident response and resolving complex technical issues.

Demonstrable ability to coordinate and mentor a small engineering team.

Experience operating within structured change and governance frameworks.

Ability to engage effectively with stakeholders across technical and programme domains.

Willingness to travel occasionally to Leatherhead, Reading, Chippenham and Bridgend.
