We are looking for a Senior IT Developer and Operations Specialist to join us in the exciting work we do in the IT Operations department in Calgary, AB. The Senior IT Developer and Operations Specialist works for the Manager, Rubix Billing Operations, who is responsible for the reliability and performance of ATCOenergy’s Rubix retail electricity and natural energy billing platform. As ATCOenergy continues to expand and enhance their systems, we are seeking an experienced Senior IT Developer and Operations Specialist to join our team and support the ongoing optimization of our retail billing system.
The Senior IT Developer & Operations Specialist will play a pivotal role in the design, development, and ongoing support of our electricity and natural gas retail billing system. This individual will lead efforts in optimizing system performance, ensuring accurate and efficient billing operations, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive the integration and improvement of key business processes. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in IT development and operations management, with a deep understanding of the Alberta energy retail sector.
This position will report to the Manager, Billing Operations (Rubix).
What You Get To Do:
Provide expert-level troubleshooting support for the billing system, resolving issues related to data integrity, billing discrepancies, and system outages. Monitor system performance, identify potential issues, and implement proactive measures to ensure smooth operations. Collaborate with the operations team to ensure that system processes align with business needs and regulatory requirements. Stay up to date with changes in energy market regulations, ensuring that billing systems are compliant with the latest rules and standards. Assist in audits and other compliance-related activities by providing system documentation and support. Prepare reports as requested on system performance, incidents, and improvements for management. Mentor junior IT team members and provide technical guidance in both development and operational best practices. Provide feedback into continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the testing process. Lead the design, development, and implementation of enhancements to the retail billing system for both electricity and natural gas services. Develop custom software solutions and integrations to meet business requirements and regulatory changes. Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code, using industry best practices and design patterns. Perform regular system upgrades, patching, and testing to ensure the stability and performance of the billing platform. Work closely with business stakeholders, including billing, customer service, and regulatory teams, to gather requirements and ensure system functionality meets business needs. Lead projects related to system upgrades, integrations, and improvements, ensuring successful delivery on time and within budget. Oversee the testing phase, from a requirements resolution and testing strategy perspective, collaborating with quality assurance teams to ensure thorough test planning and execution. Analyze test results and work closely with development teams to resolve issues and ensure the delivery of high-quality solutions. Collaborate with quality assurance teams to develop comprehensive test cases and scripts. Analyze and interpret test results, working closely with and providing actionable insights to development teams for issue resolution, to ensure the delivery of high-quality solutions.Who You Are:
Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or Engineering is required. 7+ years of experience in IT development, with at least 3 years focused on retail billing systems within electricity and/or natural gas retail markets. Strong expertise in developing, maintaining, and optimizing billing systems and related applications (e.g., SAP, Oracle Utilities, or custom in-house systems). Hands-on experience with SQL, database management, and system integrations. Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, .NET, Python, or similar. Experience working with billing-related protocols, EDI, and data formats (e.g., XML, JSON). Experience in large scale programs, projects or portfolios with large project teams and Project Managers. Familiarity with Alberta’s electricity and natural gas retail market regulations and processes is highly preferred. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Ability to manage multiple priorities, with excellent time management and organizational skills. Demonstrated experience in system performance monitoring and optimization. Knowledge of cloud-based solutions (AWS, Azure) and DevOps practices is an asset.What We Offer:
