Supports various laboratory departments by performing tasks, determined by specific site locations; such as order entry, specimen collections/processing, equipment reagent preparation/checks, specimen transport distribution, supply inventory, waived testing under supervision. Performs a full range of Laboratory Assistant assignments and uses judgment in making decisions and applying methods and procedures. Responsible for the most complex laboratory assistant assignments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Coordinates work by scheduling assignments and organizing the work of other Laboratory Assistants.
Maintains the quality and quantity for a specific area by ensuring the laboratory assistants’ adherence to methods and procedures.
Explains/clarifies work assignments, adapts if necessary.
Performs the most complex laboratory assistant assignments on a regular basis.
Assists in the training/mentoring of new staff members, provides regulatory documentation, and participates in the CSI and continuing education programs.
Performs other duties as listed in the Laboratory Assistant job description.
Assists in competency review of new and current Laboratory Assistants and notifies supervisor/manager of any issues in a timely manner.
Assists in the reporting of Metrics for the department.
Reviews procedures related to Laboratory Assistant/Senior Laboratory Assistant duties.
Blood BankPlaces all blood components in final disposition. Ensure all blood components are in the correct location prior to putting in final disposition. File report according to regulatory requirements. Dispose of blood components appropriately.
Applies charges as appropriate to patient accounts. Ex: special testing charges, split unit charges
Reviews and approves blood supplier invoices, resolves any discrepancies and applies charges to patient accounts as appropriate.
Apply credits to patient account as appropriate. Ex: irradiation credits, test credits and tracks wasted units.
Reviews and resolves non-credit reports.
Requests credits from blood supplier for unacceptable/defective blood components.
Files unit tags according to regulatory requirements.
Performs additional clerical tasks as assigned.
Issues units to floors and OR.
Thaws frozen components as needed.

Education/Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to two year(s) experience in a laboratory setting. Knowledge of medical terminology/human anatomy, data processing desirable. Willingness to complete medical terminology course.
Language Ability:
Excellent reading and conversational skills in English. Ability to write simple correspondence in English. Ability to effectively present information to one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Math Ability:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of E-mail and Lab System Mailbox (will train), fast orders and various data entry systems as assigned.
