Work Location: This role is eligible for hybrid – this means you’ll have the flexibility of working from home and in the office, on a scheduled rotation once probation requirements have been met. Until then, the successful incumbent will be expected to work on-site, full-time.
GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY
The Senior Liability Specialist is responsible for day-to-day team leadership and technical guidance of Liability Specialists involved in the administration of liability claims for all lines of insurance (commercial, personal lines and farm) within SGI CANADA. This position provides specialized support in the interpretation and application of coverages under multiple SGI CANADA Property lines of insurance and relative case law, working closely with our legal team to administer this portfolio of work. The Senior Liability Specialist is also responsible for the administration of complex, high value and sensitive claims.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Liability Claims Management
Provides technical guidance and direction to Liability Specialists, adjusters, brokers and other internal divisions on claims relating to liability, including bodily injury as it pertains to tort law.
Provides guidance to Liability Specialists on highly complex claims.
Manages the intake, investigation, negotiation and settlement of claims, ensuring that corporate standards and procedures are followed and that claims are equitably settled.
Provides guidance to Liability Specialists, adjusters, brokers and management on sensitive claims by intervening between the claimant and the adjuster where possible disputes could occur, investigating continuing disputes, upholding or overriding adjuster decision and/or taking corrective action when appropriate.
Provides direction and, if needed, decisions on payout and reimbursement of high value claims or of claims with significant cost, to adjusters and legal counsel.
Verifies coverage and/or validity of claims as determined through interpretation of the policy wordings and other related acts and case law.
Contacts and/or interviews witnesses, legal representatives, or other external persons as required.
Leads internal process improvement meetings to foster continual improvement.
Maintains a portfolio of historical abuse files and works closely with legal for maintenance and settlement of these files.
Creates, reviews and responds to claims decision and denial requests.
Investigates and provides input on ministerial and Fair Practices Office inquiries.
Conducts claims reviews and audits.
Administration and Adjudication
Coordinates the general administration of liability claims unit including scheduling, dispatching, monitoring workflow and maintaining reporting for various stakeholders including reserving, cycle time and file reviews.
Researches and gathers relevant case law to support decision making.
Maintains up to date knowledge of industry trends, regulations and best practices as it pertains to liability exposures.
Develops, maintains and coordinates applicable training for Liability Specialists.
Collects and analyzes quality control data to assist with creating an equitable distribution of files among liability specialists.
Provides input in the development and refinement of quality control standards for customer services and file management including the monitoring of results towards meeting or exceeding established standards.
Approves claim payments entered by team members or independent adjusters.
Administers claim payments and settlements.
Responds to inquiries for challenging claims and advancing and supporting appropriate company representatives where added authority or input is required.
Responds to complex issues arising through claims handling and reaches equitable resolutions.
Collaborates with regional adjusters to provide support and maintain consistent approach and settlement of liability claims.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Knowledge of the insurance coverages and benefits for the adjustment of liability claims, other related legislation, general policy wordings, and general business policy wordings appropriate for the department to which applying.
Knowledge of general insurance theory and the principles, practices, methods, and techniques related to the adjustment of claims.
Knowledge of the corporation's processes and procedures related to the adjustment and settlement of claims.
Knowledge of case laws pertaining to commercial general liability and tort claims.
Skill in determining values, depreciation, and repair or replacement costs.
Skill in determining the degree of negligence and/or extent of quantum in claims of liability.
Skill in oral communication with the ability to engage effectively with all management levels.
Skill in analyzing information such as caselaw and legal opinions.
EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS
Two-year diploma from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study, such as Business, or Health Sciences or defined equivalency.
EXPERIENCE
5 - 7 years claims experience handling complex property and casualty claims.
