 Introduction to Team  

The InsurTech machine learning team at Expedia Group utilizes our suite of insurance and related products to give travelers confidence in their travel plans. The team’s responsibilities cover all of Expedia Group’s lines of business including Flights, Cars, Packages, and Lodging. In addition to traditional travel insurance, we also develop innovative products offering travelers protection against events such as adverse weather and flight price changes. We work closely with other teams in the Data & AI organization to continually improve our tools, processes, and platforms for building and deploying industry leading machine learning solutions.  

The Senior Machine Learning Scientist will be a technical leader on the team, mentoring junior members as you work together to deliver major projects across our scope. You will own the end-to-end delivery of projects contributing to significant financial impact. You will utilize a variety of machine learning techniques to solve challenging business problems. You will work with a dynamic group of product managers, actuaries, engineers, and scientists to achieve Expedia’s business goals.  

In this role, you will:  

Design, implement, and maintain end-to-end model pipelines based on a detailed understanding of business requirements  

Act as a technical lead, owning projects across the team while mentoring junior members 

Independently manage stakeholders, with frequent communication and expectation management to meet deadlines and minimize surprises 

Develop a deep understanding of the travel insurance industry and propose innovative solutions to drive value 

Stay abreast of developments in machine learning via publications and conferences  

Experience and qualifications:  

Bachelor's, Master’s, or PhD degree in a quantitative field 

5 years of industry experience as a Data Scientist or similar role 

Expert in the Python data science stack 

Significant experience using Spark for production machine learning pipelines 

Demonstrated ability to build, deploy and maintain multiple machine learning projects performing live inference in production environments  

Strong grasp of statistical concepts and significant industry experience with hypothesis testing  

 

The total cash range for this position in Seattle is $173,000.00 to $242,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $277,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
