What Your Job Will Be Like:
The Senior Manager, R&D leads line and program management teams comprised of scientists and engineers in establishing and implementing a vision for forefront science and engineering with broad impact in both the research and applied technology communities. The Senior Manager fosters broad internal and external partnerships to ensure impactful research outcomes for sponsors. The 8360 Senior Manager is a key leader in Sandia’s energy research portfolio and the Combustion Research Facility.
On any given day, you may be called upon to do the following:
+ Provide strategic vision, leadership, and assure execution of current activities across a wide range of program areas.
+ Apply mission knowledge and experience to independently judge work quality, performance, and alignment of results with customer expectations.
+ Partner extensively with industry and other national labs to identify priorities and build consensus for R&D needed to implement national priorities.
+ Lead development of customer relationships and funding for the organization by understanding the work and capabilities of your organizations and partnering with managers to connect these with potential collaborators, beneficiaries, and customers.
+ Work with colleagues across Sandia to ensure alignment between the work of the organization and Sandia’s strategic aims
+ Partner with Sandia’s Energy and Homeland Security program portfolio leadership to help guide Transportation and Industrial Processing Program. Partner with Sandia’s engineering science leadership to advance the Lab capability for all missions.
+ Oversee and manage managers and members of the workforce, including hiring, professional development, and assessment and performance management, consistent with the mission of the organization.
+ Guide and coach managers and staff in connecting their work to customer needs, organizational goals, and Sandia's missions. Ensure that customer needs are satisfied through the creation and sustainment of trust-based relationships with stakeholders inside and outside Sandia.
+ Lead implementation of safe and secure work practices. Participate with internal stakeholders to develop, evaluate, and implement operational methodologies, always seeking efficient and effective approaches to identify and address risks while meeting work scope, schedules, budgets, and organizational goals.
+ Support the center director and center leadership team in crafting an organizational vision and objectives that are consistent with Sandia’s strategic plan and customer expectations.
+ Assist in planning and coordinating a diverse range of research and development activities and processes for new technological initiatives and products within and across the organization.
Due to the nature of the work the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$219,500 - $373,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
+ Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, physical sciences or related fields (Physics, Chemistry, Materials), and 10 or more years of related experience
+ Five or more years demonstrated leadership and/or managerial experience in a world-leading research organization
+ Ability and willingness to travel regularly (~25%) in support of programmatic and scientific objectives and partnership development
+ Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
+ Experience with energy technologies; experience with nuclear deterrence
+ Demonstrated record of world-class technical accomplishments including awards, fellowships, and other recognition of high impact research
+ Experience leading an integrated experimental and computational research program
+ Proven commitment to safe operations in a complex laboratory environment
+ Demonstrated success in strategic planning and development
+ Exhibited ability to establish and grow research programs
+ Demonstrated effectiveness in building and leading large multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams or programs; demonstrated ability to build effective relationships and alliances across organizational boundaries
+ Experience successfully working with DOE customers and colleagues at universities and other national labs
+ Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent written and oral communications and negotiation skills
About Our Team:
The Engineering & Transportation Sciences Group (8360) performs world-leading research in combustion and diagnostics, hydrogen and material science, and the mechanics of engineered materials. The Applied Combustion departments (8361 and 8362) use optical diagnostics to study the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and chemical reactions that lead to reduced emissions and increased efficiency in combustion systems. The Hydrogen and Material Science department (8367) studies the effects of hydrogen on solid materials to assure the safety and reliability of hydrogen fuel cell systems and the fueling infrastructure, as well as nuclear weapon components. The Mechanics of Materials department (8363) performs experimental and computational studies to characterize and predict the thermal-mechanical behavior of materials, from atoms to continuum, specializing in fracture and failure. Numerical methodologies are developed to implement new material models in high-performance computing simulations.

Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
