Senior Manager, Geosciences Research and Applications - Onsite

Salary Range: $184,400 - $313,700 *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential. What Your Job Will Be Like: The Climate Security Center (8900) is seeking a Senior Manager for its Geoscience Research and Applications Group (8910). In this role, you will lead a team of five R&D departments comprising approximately 80 skilled scientists, engineers, technologists, postdocs, contractors, and student interns with diverse expertise in geophysics, geochemistry, geomechanics, geology, geotechnical engineering, and computational science. The 8910 group, central to Sandia’s Earth Science Research Foundation, focuses on complex field experimentation and analysis, driving national priorities such as critical minerals, geothermal energy, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, fossil energy utilization, and potentially geologic hydrogen. This position offers a unique leadership opportunity at both lab and national levels, with 40% of current work in Energy and Homeland Security and 30% in Global Security. The senior manager will oversee the Subsurface and Carbon Management sub-program within the Energy and Homeland Security Portfolio and the DOE Office of Science Basic Energy Sciences Geosciences sub-program under the Advanced Science and Technology Portfolio, all while fostering a strong safety culture in lab and field activities. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. On any given day, you may be called on to do the following: + Provide strategic vision and leadership to execute activities across various program areas + Engage with a diverse customer base, including DOE, DoD, and industry, to enhance programs in fossil energy, carbon management, geothermal energy, hydrogen, nonproliferation, basic geoscience, nuclear weapons systems, and nuclear waste management + Contribute to strategy development and cooperative management of Energy and related programs at the Center and Division levels + Foster a safe, secure, and productive work environment for managers and staff + Support professional development for the management team + Ensure timely responses to internal and external needs, policies, and requirements + Collaborate with external customers, other national labs, and Sandia colleagues + Oversee geochemistry, geomechanics, and geothermal laboratory facilities in buildings 823, 849, 851, and 740, as well as field activities in NM, NV, SD, and other locations Qualifications We Require: + Master's degree or above in science, engineering, mathematics, or other relevant technical field, with at least 8 years of relevant experience; OR equivalent combination of education and experience + Three or more years of managerial experience leading and directing technical staff in an R&D organization + Experience developing or leading R&D programs + Experience maintaining a safe and secure work environment + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-Level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + PhD in geosciences, mechanical engineering, or other closely related fields + Five years of demonstrated leadership and/or managerial experience + Success in strategic leadership, including developing and executing a strategic vision + Demonstrated ability to build, energize, and lead large R&D teams + Effective working knowledge of Sandia’s missions, programs, and organizational structure + Ability to collaborate effectively within an organization and with external partners + Experience developing and leading large geoscience-related programs, especially for DOE + Ability to deliver results in R&D projects with multiple organizations and customer interfaces + Experience creating a safe, secure, and productive work environment in an R&D setting with substantial operational safety exposure About Our Team: The Geoscience Research & Applications Group consists of five departments that span earth science and earth engineering: Geotechnology & Engineering; Geophysics & Atmospheric Science, Geomechanics, Geochemistry, and Geothermal Research. The Group conducts research and development that spans the range from fundamental scientific investigation to engineering design and implementation to solve challenging national problems in the intersection of the earth system and the engineered environment. Major work projects and themes include scientific and engineering support of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, R&D for nuclear waste repositories, location and characterization of underground facilities, cleanup of subsurface and surface contamination, advanced drilling techniques for geothermal exploration and production, developing understanding of earth materials in in-situ conditions, and operations and engineering management of the DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement site in Alaska.
