Your role:

 

Under the leadership and guidance of the Director of Local Operations, the Senior Manager will lead and execute CBC News operational strategies and objectives for British Columbia.This role is a key member of the leadership team in British Columbia based in Vancouver, focused on supporting the needs of the editorial and production teams by driving and implementing strategies to best manage workflows, technology, staff, physical assets and facilities in Vancouver, and other locations in British Columbia.  

You will be responsible for planning, coordinating and directing staff, financial and physical resources. You will ensure that the station’s technical infrastructure and production resources comply with industry and CBC/Radio-Canada standards and are used effectively in executing daily productions through a continuous improvement and data driven approach. 

 

You are a creative problem-solver who likes the challenge of designing efficient and effective workflows, process improvement and leading change.  You are committed to diversity and inclusion in our workplace and our programming.  You will ensure that CBC British Columbia programs and storytelling look and sound great on all platforms and you will make sure that the people making the content and programming are creative, bold and focused on the audience.

As part of the leadership team, you will be expected to develop and implement strategies to deepen community connections and build audiences across all platforms. 

Key tasks:

Supervise and direct all operations staff (Video Producers, Videographers,Editors, Switcher Directors, Makeup Artists, Media Librarians) and physical resources and facilities, 

Develop operational training and development needs for teams while ensuring all programs and platforms are supported and maintained. Conducts performance reviews and career development conversations with operations staff.

Keep up-to-date on new technology and work methods in the video streaming, digital/mobile, radio and television broadcast industry. 

Determine requirements and ensure implementation of facilities and equipment to facilitate daily and long term operations;

Work in partnership with editorial leadership to support the journalists and producers as they deliver high quality, multi-platform programming and content that meets established strategic priorities

Review and revise workflows to adapt to new technological tools and storytelling formats and develop training plans to support change

Act as the primary liaison with real estate and building management teams to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment;

Ensure adherence to CBC technical and production standards, journalistic, HR, Health and Safety and Finance policy standards;

Lead and build a culture that prioritizes operational risk assessments and health and safety with staff assignment;

Evaluate and develop yearly budgets,and forecast, track, control and authorize expenditures within predetermined limits;

Develop close working relationships with other CBC/Radio Canada network and regional members to maximize coordination of resources;

Lead organizational priorities and main departmental initiatives to employees and partners;

Plan and implement in-studio and remote activities, draft plans and estimates, and authorize production facilities for large-scale special programs;

Work with management, human resources and union representatives on various projects, committees, labour disputes and contingency plans;

Create development and succession plans for staff under your purview, to ensure continuity and staff career development.

Work with the CBC News Operations leadership team to collaborate,  innovate and execute strategy.

We are looking for a candidate with the following: 

Five (5) years of leadership and staff management experience

Ten (10) years’ broadcast experience, including in video streaming, digital, television, radio or in a related field

Strong understanding of broadcast and content creation technologies and workflows

Strong strategic, leadership, communication and management skills

Innovator of workflows and creative problem solver.

Demonstrated experience leading change and project management

Passion for lean process improvement and data driven decision making

Ability to lead and champion employee well being and health and safety

Champion of diversity and inclusion in our content and workplace

Experience leading in a unionized and collective agreement work environment.  

Proven budgetary management experience

Able to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously with very tight deadlines

Able to analyze complex situations, systems and relationships

French and other language skills an asset

Willing to travel within British Columbia and other locations occasionally

Able to work long hours and on weekends as needed.
