Senior Manager, Staff Engineering - REMOTE

Position Summary  

GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Manager, Data Engineering with a passion for building high performance, low-latency platforms, and applications. You will build and manage a team of engineers with a deep focus on growing GEICO’s data engineering capabilities. The statistical (STAT) reporting team is responsible for state and regulatory filings across GEICO and will be undertaking a major re-platform to a modern data engineering solution. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in building modern data engineering solutions and pipelines using open-source technologies. 

 

Position Description  

​Our Senior Manager is an engineering leader who works with the engineering staff to innovate and build a high performing open-source solution that seamlessly integrates with our various applications within our ecosystem. A Senior Manager will lead the strategy and execution of a technical roadmap that will increase the velocity of delivering products and unlock new engineering capabilities. The ideal candidate will define and execute on a technical strategy to transform our current STAT reporting platform. You will partner and work closely with the Business, Product, and peer Data Engineering teams to ensure that the solution is delivered in line with target state data platforms and initiatives. 

 

Position Responsibilities  

​​As a Senior Manager, you will:  

Work with your Director to address project dependencies, negotiate and estimate incremental delivery dates for milestones with the stakeholder community, and deliver projects on time  

​Identify and raise appropriate project risks, in addition to presenting detailed and implementable solutions or alternatives  

​Understand how requirements and design choices may impact systems across multiple areas  

​Report on your team’s progress for project and other key metrics 

Cultivate a culture that motivates all levels of performers to higher levels of achievement   

​Identify where technical or analytical skill gaps put future team deliverables at risk and craft a plan to remediate, consistently challenge team members to share knowledge and learn new technologies  

Manage up to leadership as well as give feedback when appropriate  

​Craft fully compliant quality documentation  

​Lead people, products, and process and be a thought leader to innovate how we transform into a data driven organization 

Demonstrate strategic thinking and strong planning skills to establish long term roadmap and business plan 

Strong relationship building to establish and foster great relationships with tech teams and business partners 

Able to work independently while functioning as part of a cohesive cross-functional management team 

Coach, develop, and manage associates and supervisors, including establishing goals and evaluating performance 

Work with stakeholders to establish and meet data quality requirements, SLAs and SLOs for data ingestion 

 

Qualifications  

Proven management experience leading teams of 6+ engineers 

Strong understanding of data ingestion, data transformation, data management, data quality, and data lineage concepts 

Hands-on experience with modern open data stack technologies, including Apache Iceberg, Spark, Flink, DBT, Python, Kafka, Airflow, NiFi, etc. 

Strong knowledge of cloud computing technologies and concepts (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, etc.) 

Fluency with at least one modern language such as Python, Java, Go and experience with open-source software is a big plus 

Proven ability to concentrate and demonstrate a capacity for learning technical concepts and adapting to new technologies quickly 

Strong Cloud (AWS, GCP, Azure etc.) platform knowledge 

Proficiency in Project Management and work item management tools such as GitHub and Azure DevOps 

Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and core computer science concepts 

Fluency with SQL and PowerBI 

Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments 

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate to both Senior Leadership, highly technical and non-technical audiences 

Experience designing, building, optimizing, and scaling solutions using distributed computing 

Proven experience with CI/CD pipelines and build and release practices 

Experience  

​​10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including software development lifecycle best practices    

5+ years of development in a large-scale, mission-critical environment     

5+ years of hands-on work experience supervising personnel in a technical environment     

2+ years' experience with automated testing including Unit, Integration, and End-to-End functional testing 

 

Education  

​​Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related field

Annual Salary

$120,000.00 - $300,000.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
