Roles and Responsibilities of:
Interact and build trust with business units in the USClose interaction and coordination/leadership with operational leadersProvide training and guidance to frontline sales / operation staff on relevant sales and use tax compliance matters, exemptions, documentation etc.Assess, quantify and communicate indirect taxes risk(s) to supervisorEnhance risk management by continuous review, optimization of processes, data and systems for efficiency and effectivenessMonitor state and local indirect tax developments, including understanding how these developments affect the company's operations; identify and implement indirect tax planning opportunities through review of laws, regulations and the filing of special exemptions, deferrals, and credits; evaluates tax implications of company activities and develops strategies to minimize tax obligations; staying current with changes in tax laws and regulations and providing recommendations for process improvements and policy changes as needed. Provides global oversight for US indirect taxes, coordinating with external advisors and team leaders as needed –e.g. related to new business, transactions, planning, system upgrades, etc.Draft/review US sales taxes position papersResearch and assess viability of:Tax planning opportunities to optimize tax recoveries and available government credits/incentivesTransformation opportunities to increase automationEnsure appropriate tax document retention, version control, and knowledge managementManage US indirect tax controversy and dispute resolution activities. The candidate should be adept at coordinating and managing multiple projects under strict time constraints, promoting teamwork, and developing teams. Ability to comprehend and summarize complex concepts, present information effectively, and respond to inquiries from various stakeholders.The candidate should thrive in a fast-paced work environment, possess solid influencing and negotiation skills, demonstrate a powerful work ethic, and have excellent proficiency in Excel. Familiarity with Tax Engine/Tools is advantageous.The candidate should be familiar with:
Indirect tax compliance and related auditsIndirect tax credits/incentivesIndirect tax acquisitions/divestitures and related due diligenceNon-automated indirect tax ERP set-up and rollout to store locationsIndirect tax budgeting and forecastingIndirect tax related to non-US activities in Canada, Europe and other CountriesKnowledge of GST/HST/PST and VATContract review knowledge and tax effect of purchaseQualifications:
Certified accountant or lawyer designationMinimum 8-10 years of advisory and compliance experience within US indirect taxes, including but not limited to Sales and Use,Fuel/Excise, Real/Personal Property, Tobacco and other Excise Taxes
