Senior Manager, Western Casualty Claims

Our team needs an Sr Manager, Western Casualty to lead a team of Claims Leaders. Reporting to the VP of Claims, we need the individual in this role to influence and operationalize the strategies and direction set by the Senior Leadership Team for Casualty.

What you'll do: 

Act as a general manager or “owner” of the Western Casualty claims teams (over 40 people) to fully understand, all issues and opportunities and to develop plans, objectives and strategies. 

Run the day-to-day operations of the Western Casualty Claims team, budget and performance 

Lead a team of people leaders (4 to 5) to deliver an improvement in their performance, strategy and goals 

Leadership of a team of technical adjusters (over 30) that handle over 5,000 claims 

Work with both internal and external Lawyers

Create and foster a culture passionate about customer-centricity and technical excellence 

Ensure the operational risks Aviva is exposed to, and the team’s outputs are effectively managed 

Build positive relationships of trust and mutual respect with colleagues and collaborate closely with other claims operations (PD and Accident Benefits), ATL, external lawyers, actuarial, pricing, analytics, Claims IT and Finance. 

Monitor and evaluate the financial performance and trends (frequency and severity) of our lines of Business (Bodily injury, CGL, etc.). Identify root cause of results and execute initiatives to drive positive performance 

Lead all aspects of and report on large losses ($250K+) across Casualty Claims and working to improve the technical acumen of the larger Casualty team. 

Be a key contributor in the National Claims organization, building networks and relationships across multiple lines of business, and across enterprise-wide initiatives 

Lead services that directly impact Aviva Canada’s customers and brokers and therefore its brand and market reputation 

Lead and manage people – delivering on our Aviva Values and our employee promise of recognizing, developing and engaging our people 

Sustain key external relationships with significant partners (e.g., Insurance Bureau of Canada), Brokers 


What you'll bring: 

University Degree or equivalent work experience 

Law Degree or equivalent litigation management experience 

CIP/FCIP designation preferred 

In-depth understanding of claims handling across both personal and commercial lines including sophisticated commercial accounts 

A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a team leadership role, through progressive levels of accountability/team size 

Advanced written and verbal communication skills are required to understand, synthesize, interpret and convey, in a simplified manner, complex data and information to audiences with varying levels of expertise 

Sophisticated leadership and people management skills to empower, develop, and manage performance 

Business management ability with experience translating strategy into sound technical and business processes 

Shown ability to get results through collaborative, outcomes-focused relationships with multiple internal and external partners 

Proven track record to motivate and encourage staff.

Propensity for execution and passion for continuous improvement 

Strong customer service, negotiation and decision-making skills

Demonstrated oral and written communication, and social skills to effectively manage and negotiate in a professional manner and to work collaboratively in a team environment 

Developing and communicating briefings to senior leadership (EVP, Claims SLT, Results meetings) 

Demonstrated coaching, influence and persuasion skills
