What Will You Be Doing?

The Sr. Manager, Indirect Tax is responsible for all indirect tax accounting, reporting, and compliance and engages in tax research and planning as required.  This includes passenger, property, sales & use, fuel excise, and any other applicable taxes.  This position is also responsible for the management of staff indirect tax accountants and managers (if applicable), including their contribution to timely compliance, filings and overall development. 

Essential Functions

Tax compliance - Review all passenger, property, sales & use, fuel excise, and other required tax returns and related payments.  Ensure the appropriate taxes are collected or assessed and properly remitted. This includes but is not limited to determining the applicable rules in new jurisdictions, both domestic and international.  Act as the primary point of contact during audits and other agency communications.  Tax accounting – Review month-end journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations for all indirect tax accounts.  Implement new month-end processes where necessary to maximize efficiencies across all accounting functions. Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal controls over financial reporting for SOX purposes. Technology – Identify ways to streamline and improve processes through data analytics and other technology tools.  Implement and administer IT systems related to Tax as necessary. Technical Tax Research – Monitor, research and analyze tax issues to maintain and communicate knowledge of past, present and potential future tax laws, regulations, rulings, procedures and court decisions to determine effects on the Company and recommend appropriate tax positions. Tax audits – Coordinate the representation of the Company during tax audits by ensuring compliance with government information or document requests. Respond to notices of proposed adjustments.  Assemble and maintain accounting and tax records to support filed returns and financial statement accounting entries for internal and external audits.  Manage vendors engaged on tax audits. Budget – Track, report, and project all indirect cash tax payments on a weekly basis.  Coordinate the collection of data for the annual operating plan and quarterly projections.

Other Functions

Assist the Tax Director with special projects and tax planning.  Coordinate across departments on efficiencies, policies and requirements with respect to initiatives that have a direct impact on the indirect tax function. (Operations, Purchasing, Network Planning, etc.) Collaborate with other functions to provide guidance on the accounting and reporting impacts of any indirect tax changes resulting from business initiatives. Interact independently with senior financial management.  Adapt to changing priorities and tight deadlines, analyze and solve problems, work independently and motivate others.  Manage vendors, domestic and foreign, as needed to complete essential functions. Coordinate system enhancements and department process improvements that directly impact the indirect tax function. Lead and coordinate budget and forecasting activities, including preparation of variance analysis. Actively provide training/development to new and existing staff as needed.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Business Master’s Degree in Taxation preferred Minimum of 6 to 12 years of indirect tax experience Supervisory experience strongly preferred CPA strongly preferred Excellent verbal, written, and analytical skills Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Experience with data analytics, robotics process automation, and/or other technology tools (Alteryx preferred) Previous airline experience preferred
