Senior Manager - Mechanical & Aerospace Engineer

This is a Senior Managerial role that 50% management 50% technical leading the Mechanical and Aeropspace functional group. The group contain approximately 20 technical staff from interns to chief/principles. The team flows between projects in the space and air domains based on need. As the Functional Group manager, you would guide the staffing, maturation, and growth of the team. You would provide mechanical technical guidance to air and space portfolio. You would jump in as needed to support gaps as a player/coach to help the team be successful. The team focuses on research, design, develop, analyze, test, and production of a variety of aerospace systems for government customers. A successful candidate will wear many hats and be a Subject Matter Expert in a couple areas key to the mechanical groups performance. The team has active projects in things such as mechanical design for RF electronics packaging, materials selection for spaceborne payloads including adhesives and radome materials, manufacturing process definition including lamination, payload integration, aerospace materials, aircraft stores, composite fabrication, operational demonstrations, aircraft integration, and/or qualification testing with consultation from other engineering disciplines. They will sometimes represent the mechanical group for customer interactions and milestones.

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering group is a high performing team with a breadth of experience in mechanical design, payload integration, aircraft integration, electronics manufacturing process development, RF electronics packaging, materials selection and testing, structural, and thermal analysis/design.  

The Senior Engineering Manager for Mechanical and Aerospace will perform the following\:    

Act as Function Group Manager for the Mechanical team.     Support the conversion of CONOPs and customer requests into payload and component requirements.     Support Business Development plans for the Mech team.    Creation of multiple concepts to meet those requirements including, but not limited to, selection of materials, thermal management, structural design, and test methods for space-based RF electronics.     Guidance of maturation on multiple projects assuring team has the tools, skills, and bandwidth to execute successfully.    Aid in the coordination across integrated product teams.    Act as Program Manager for smaller projects ad hoc.    Support reporting of testing results including support for design reviews both internal and external.    Creation of multiple concept solutions to those requirements and execution of the chosen path. Jumping in as needed to close gaps including creation of 3D CAD (SolidWorks) design and drafting of mechanical/electrical components and assemblies, and aid in vendor research and selection. Represent the mechanical group in classified and unclassified settings to audiences up to executive levels.

Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical or similar with 12 years of experience or Master's degree with 10 years. 5 years in a supervisory capacity. 5 years of experience in the air and/or space domains. Ability to work in a dynamic environment with cross-functional teams. Effective time management and prioritization skills. Excellent communication and documentation skills. Works well as a part of a team. Good problem-solving skills. Good interpersonal skills including a passionate and can-do attitude. Must be able to plan and execute multiple technical tasks concurrently. Familiarity with printed wiring board (PWB) fabrication and electronics assembly processes. Experience with design for manufacturability. Experience resolving qualification and production failures. Understanding of principles for performing mechanical analysis including structural, thermal, or vibration. Hands-on manufacturing experience. CAD and PDM Experience. Familiarity with and ability to use and manipulate technical drawings in mechanical CAD tools such as SolidWorks. Familiarity with aerospace manufacturing and quality processes including AS9100.    Travel\: less than 20%. Position is located in Severn, MD office with occasional classified meetings in the DC area.

Current TS/SCI/SAP clearance. Experience with Composites. Experience managing Mangers. Program management Experience. FEA experience in ANSYS.  Experience with space-based system analysis. Familiarity with manufacturing processes – in particular as they relate to the production of RF Aperture systems. Experience with package level system analysis.   High reliability electronics packaging design experience. CAD experience in SolidWorks. Experience with NASTRAN. Experience creating and executing DOE (design of experiments). Machine shop experience. Familiarity with MIL-STD-810, NASA GEVS, SMC-S-016, RTCA DO-160, AS9100, NASA-STD-8739.1, IPC 600, MIL-STD-8591, DOD and FAA Airworthiness processes. Proficient with analysis tools including Ansys, Sherlock, Icepack, STK, SolidWorks simulation, and/or NASTRAN. Master's Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or similar advanced degree. *
