The Credit Risk Review organization within Global Risk & Compliance (GRC) is responsible for identifying and managing credit risk across all processes and geographies at American Express.
The candidate is responsible to conduct independent assessments of Commercial credit exposures and credit risk, develop and maintain automated monitoring rules, review credit risk processes, and take part in projects that provide effective challenge to 1st line credit risk teams. The results of the Credit Risk assessments are shared with Senior Management and assure that Institutional Credit risk is properly evaluated and effectively communicated.
The role also provides the opportunity to work with and impact numerous diverse businesses at American Express. The breadth of responsibilities in this role provides a great training ground for a candidate looking to understand the key principles of Institutional credit risk management.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct independent reviews of commercial credit risk obligations and processes and provide effective challenge to Credit Risk Teams. Evaluate adequacy of analysis completed by Credit Risk including accuracy of credit ratings, timeliness of rating changes, identification of potential credit weaknesses and adherence to policies, procedures and regulations. Prepare & provide Senior management with periodic formal reporting regarding quality of portfolio, adequacy of management / monitoring practices, and potential emerging risks. Conduct quantitative analysis on risk management data to drive insights and recommendations for first line teams. Analyze trends in the charge and lending portfolios and conduct deep dive analysis to understand key drivers. Collaborate with Business Unit Risk teams to enhance decision processes or address major credit issues. Identify credit risk metrics (e.g. KRIs and KPIs) to continuously monitor and oversee risk.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree with high GPA and a degree (or substantial coursework) in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Business. 7+ years of Banking or Credit risk management experience and strong experience related to Commercial credit extension and management. Ability to review corporate financial statements to determine the ability of the obligor to honor its credit obligations. Familiarity with banking regulations, particularly those imposed by OCC and Federal Reserve. Knowledge of macroeconomic trends and its impact on borrower repayment. Project management skills, ability to deliver high quality results while meeting deadlines, department and personal goals. Ability to clearly communicate oversight findings to credit risk peers, business partners, and senior leaders. Demonstrates the courage to challenge the status quo. Self-starter with natural curiosity to solve problems. Experience with data-driven analytical tools (e.g. SQL, SAS, HIVE, R, Python) is a plus
