The mission of the Office of Research (OR) is to enable excellence of researchers across the breadth of disciplines represented at the UW. UW has a $1.8B research portfolio, with research representing more than 20% of the University’s revenue. Facilitating proposal submission, setting up awards, and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations is a large part of OR’s work. OR and its Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) have long worked in partnership with CoMotion to meet the needs of researchers pursuing industry-sponsored research agreements. CoMotion partners with the UW community on their innovation journey, providing tools, connections, and acumen to transform ideas into economic and societal impact. Through its interconnected services of Innovation Training, Intellectual Property (IP) Advising & Protection, Funding & Mentorship, and Licensing, Startups, & Incubation, CoMotion seeks to: elevate the global impact and visibility of the UW through research translation; enhance diversity and inclusion in the UW innovation ecosystem; identify and pursue new opportunities to lower barriers to entrepreneurship and increase spinoff success; create, nurture, and strengthen internal and external partnerships that are mutually beneficial and harness synergies to bolster our local and regional innovation ecosystem; and meet the evolving needs of the innovation ecosystem through continuous, data-driven improvements and programmatic innovation. Research partnerships with industry bring research dollars to UW and significantly increase the likelihood that a discovery will be developed into products and services that impact society. Both OSP and CoMotion strive to provide the highest level of professionalism and expertise to support and promote an outstanding research environment, and to deliver the highest level of impact through the translation of research advances into products that make a difference in people’s lives. Our offices also aim at supporting the recruitment and retention of faculty by delivering excellence in technology transfer and industry relations. The Senior Manager Sponsored Research Intellectual Property (SRIP) enhances CoMotion and OSP by facilitating seamless interactions with companies interested in sponsoring research at UW. Providing exceptional customer service attracts and retains partners, while also aiding in the navigation of early IP issues in sponsored research agreements. The Senior Manager SRIP provides training on IP terms in sponsored agreements including industry-sponsored research agreements, material transfer agreements, data use agreements, other types of non-award agreements. This position reviews agreements redlined by OSP prior to returning to the sponsor; reviews proposals with upfront terms and conditions related to IP ownership and disposition; handles Strategic Agreements and Master Agreements from cradle to grave; advises the OSP Subawards Team on nonstandard IP terms and language; and occasionally works with the sponsors to finalize IP language. The Senior Manager SRIP builds and implements processes, template language, and guidance to meet the IP goals of OSP and CoMotion. **Responsibilities:** **IP Strategy and Advisory Service: 50%** + Evaluate IP terms at the proposal stage, in agreements, and subawards, including a comprehensive review. + Assess redlines created by OSP staff for compliance with University policy on IP terms in sponsored research including GIM40. Provide feedback and alternative language as needed. + Aid in navigating early IP issues in sponsored research agreements. + Advise the OSP subawards team on nonstandard IP terms and language. + Identify potential IP conflicts and provide solutions to mitigate risks. **Process Improvement: 20%** + Develop and enhance processes, template language, and guidance documents for negotiating IP language in sponsored research agreements, non-award agreements and subawards. **Training: 10%** + Conduct training sessions for OSP staff on acceptable intellectual property language in sponsored research agreements, Non-award agreements and subawards **Strategic and Master Agreements: 10%** + Manage assigned strategic agreements and master agreements from inception to completion. **Direct Negotiation: 5%** + Negotiate directly with sponsors on intellectual property language and terms that are mutually beneficial for the university and the sponsor. **Policy Development: 5%** + Assist leadership with the development or updates of policies related to intellectual property. **Requirements:** Bachelor’s degree and four years of experience in a law firm or an intellectual property office or unitExperience negotiating intellectual property terms in sponsored research or license agreements **Desired:** Experience in working collaboratively with researchers and industry.Demonstrated excellence in building relationships with university researchers and industry sponsors.Familiarity with standard intellectual property terms in university sponsored research agreements.Knowledge of UW policies and guidelines for intellectual property.Knowledge of requirements from federal funding agencies regarding intellectual propertyExcellent negotiation and conflict management skills **Working Conditions:** Must live within commuting distance of UW Seattle CampusMay be eligible for a hybrid work schedule.CoMotion hosts events and meetings for which in-person attendance is mandatoryWe anticipate that the offered salary will be positioned around the midpoint of the salary range **Application Process:** The application process may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
