Senior Materials Engineer

Air Products is seeking a materials engineer to provide materials support to world scale air separation, renewable ammonia, hydrogen and gasification plants in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). This employee will provide materials expertise and failure analysis support to the plants for all their materials questions about metals, elastomers, plastics, and composites under cryogenic, ambient, and high temperature conditions. This position will require 25-40% travel from their home location in The Hague, the Netherlands, to the plant sites in KSA to develop relationships with plant operations personnel and to provide in person materials support when failures occur.

The primary workload of the Materials Engineer will be to understand, mitigate and prevent equipment failures through failure analysis support of operating plants. Eventually be expected to study long term performance under simulated plant operating conditions and build predictive models to anticipate long term performance and inspection and replacement intervals. The Materials Engineering Technology team works with a wide range of customers across the company in functions from engineering to plant operations to inspection and maintenance. A primary focus of the materials team is to improve the safety of Air Products’ operating plants through prevention of materials failures. Our new colleague will be part of a vibrant, close knit team located in the United States, The Hague, and China. The Materials Engineer will work closely with the local team supporting Air Products within Middle East region.

Principal AccountabilitiesCompletion of failure analysis testing.Advising design engineers on materials selection for new plants and manufacturing quality verification.Supporting operations and maintenance engineers with welding procedures, repair and replacement decisions.Advice and guidance for functions such as process, mechanical, and machinery engineers.External networking and literature monitoring to bring in industry best practices and identify promising new materials or technologies to address materials challenges faced by the company.Materials safety a primary objective.Use of standard software tools to compile data, write reports, and present recommendations to key technical and business stakeholders.

Required Skills and ExperienceB.S. with 10 years’ experience; an MS with 5 years’ experience; or a PhD with 2-3 years’ work experience (not including school or thesis work) in Materials Engineering or a related field.Work experience in materials.Experience and knowledge of the following is a plus: failure analysis, practical applications of materials in cryogenic service, challenges faced by materials in high temperature service, nonferrous alloys, carbon and low alloy steels, corrosion fundamentals, welding fundamentals, nonmetallic materials, especially thermoset glass fiber composites.Field experience working in a plant setting, especially in maintenance, inspection, and/or repair of equipment is favorable.The ideal candidate will have experience working on cross-functional teams, and a proven ability to lead teams and contribute as a team member.Fluency in written and spoken English is a necessity to ensure skilled interaction with colleagues in all global locations.
