Senior Materials Engineer II, Process R&D

Job Summary

The IFF Pharma Solutions business produces and sells high-performance cellulose derivatives, alginates and related polymers used for formulations across a broad variety of applications in the Pharmaceuticals, Food, and Industrial Specialties and Personal Care markets. The portfolio is a highly profitable part of the company and has shown significant value growth over the last several years.

As a Senior Materials Engineer within the Process Research and Development team, you will develop and improve solid handling and modification technologies with tasks ranging from process design to the evaluation and implementation of new drying, milling and granulation technologies. You will work across the functions (R&D and Process R&D, Innovation, Regulatory, Manufacturing and Technology, Marketing) to support and execute Pharma Solutions innovation, technology development and asset strategy.

Responsibilities:

The Process Research Engineer will be the solids processing expert for new and current products and processes in chemically modified cellulose and polysaccharides by:

Developing solid mixing techniques, drying and milling process simulation models and tools to evaluate process improvement opportunities and to optimize existing production technologiesInvestigating and optimizing granulation, milling and drying equipment to incorporate technology advances that decrease cost, increase capacity and reduce energy useGuiding experimental programs to ensure the results are useful for process optimization and equipment design.Scaling up of novel product or process improvements by designing and conducting trials for lab scale, pilot scale, production scale, and/or with targeted equipment vendors.Development and documentation of process technology informationTroubleshooting of commercial manufacturing processes

Qualification /skills

PhD or M.Sc  in Chemical Engineering or equivalent chemical process R&D experience (3 – 5 years) is required for this positionIndustrial experience with granulation, milling, drying, or related solids handling expertise is requiredDemonstrated knowledge and effective application of process engineering technology at larger scale, modeling tools and data analysis combined with good technical documentationCandidates will have experience in process development, have demonstrated good scientific method, and have some experience leading process research projects. Strong data analysis and technical documentation skills are required..Some travel will be involved (<15%) to conduct trials at manufacturing plants or at external vendorsStrong interpersonal and communication skills.Ability to speak fluently in English.Working knowledge of common process drawings and documentation, such as P&IDs, PFDs, Material and Energy Balances, and control narratives.Strong data analysis and technical documentation skills are required.  Experience with JMP or other statistical analysis is strongly preferredRelocation to the Great Lakes Bay Region of Michigan is required.
