Senior Materials Testing Engineer

Role Summary In this role you’ll join a diverse group of subject matter experts in the Failure Analysis and Materials Engineering team and bring your own expertise in the domain of materials testing. You will make an impact across every Rivian product line by joining our state-of-the-art Materials Testing Laboratory and by being a champion for data, commonality, engineering standards, and sound scientific principles. You will use your experience to develop material testing specifications, execute testing, and ensure material data is broadly available, easily accessible, and used accurately across Rivian. You will be responsible for managing lab work requests and competing priorities. Responsibilities Perform a wide variety of materials testing and validation on materials coming from across Rivian shops. Top-notch communication skills and ability to develop testing strategies through 1:1 conversation with engineers, designers, and manufacturing. Establish test parameters for unique situations. Design and manufacture testing samples and fixturing for novel testing requirements. Analyze and understand how fixture design may impact testing results. Draft drawings for fixtures and test specimens that can be carried out by our machine shop. Write, update, and maintain update Rivian materials testing specifications. Process and analyze testing data. Produce clear and concise reports to summarize data collected. Distill and present technical data to cross-functional teams. Go deeper than numbers and add context to testing results. Manage work requests within our LIMS (JIRA). Set day-to-day work priorities for lab team. Build and maintain a material property database. Experience with programs such as Ansys Granta or Applus Matereality would be a bonus. Comfortable as a primary technical point of contact for all materials testing. Oversee equipment maintenance, service, and calibration. Capable of safely operating basic metallographic laboratory equipment. Qualifications 4+ years of experience in materials testing. BS or MS in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant field. Expert level knowledge and experience in mechanical testing in areas including but not limited to: High Speed Tensile testing, Fatigue, tension, compression, shear, peel Experience writing and editing testing and materials standards. Experience with Finite Element Analysis and material modelling Experience with computational analysis of material and welds, the generation of static and dynamic test data in support of CAE teams. Regular utilization of common industry material testing specifications (ASTM, ISO, AWS, etc.) Material testing data processing and analysis. Ability to apply statistical methods to analyze fatigue test results, determine statistical parameters, and plot S–N curves incorporating specific probabilities of failure. Experience with material property databases such as Ansys Granta or Applus Matereality. Experience with mechanical metallurgy and fracture mechanics. Ability to describe post-test fracture characteristics, fatigue mechanisms, and crack propagation. Familiarity with primary automotive structures such as Body, Interior and Chassis assemblies. Experience with the metallurgy of steel and aluminum alloys, their manufacturing methods and microstructure features as they relate to material properties. Fundamental knowledge of polymers and polymer chemistry. Desire to promote a culture of health and safety in the laboratory. Pay Disclosure Salary Range for Illinois Based Applicants: $89,900 - $112,400 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
