Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

The COMET contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.

 

This is a group lead position within the Mechanisms/Arms & Umbilical’s group of COMET Design Engineering. In this position, the selected Engineer will be responsible for the mentoring younger engineers and providing peer review insight as well as the regular functions of design, development, test, and commissioning of Ground Support Equipment (GSE). The selected Engineer will provide technical engineering direction. Work shall include the development of models and drawings, design review presentations, and support for manufacturing and operations. Depending on the project type, this can vary from participating in conceptual design ideas to revisions to existing designs and modifications to existing structures or Ground Support Equipment (GSE). Duties also include preparation of all essential system engineering documentation components required for a complete and viable system. Responsible for planning, cost development, management, and scheduling for assigned projects. Must have ability to successfully interface with client representatives and manage completion of tasks on schedule and within budget to the customer's satisfaction. Duties may also include oversight of systems activations to validate compliance with contract documents. Must be well organized, extremely flexible and capable of juggling multiple priorities simultaneously.

 

Responsibilities

Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to\:

Use program and project management experience to develop success-oriented schedule, delegate labor resources, in support design completion of critical GSE in support of manned flight for the SLS. Create and adjust processes in support of design completion, fabrication, test and checkout of ground support equipment.  Possess interpersonal, communication and technical skill to guide the department, develop and maintain good. customer relationships.  Review and approve mechanical engineering design output. Use engineering knowledge and experience to guide and mentor less experienced mechanical engineers.  Able to effectively communicate job expectations, rapidly adapt/respond to changes in tasks and responsibilities.  Mentor and inspire members of the team for success. *

Qualifications – External

BS degree in Engineering or technical equivalent from an accredited institution; at least 10 years of experience and/or an advanced degree

 Demonstrated leadership skills as evidenced by prior managerial / supervisory and/or technical leadership    experience.  Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.  Thorough knowledge of KSC/NASA standards and associated COMET processes is highly desirable.  Working knowledge of engineering tools such as but not limited to Creo, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Windchill, Maximo, and Solumina is highly desired.  Excellent communication, presentation and customer interface skills required. PMP or MBA desired  Familiarity with KSC design processes a plus Prefer 10 years of experience with Ground Support Equipment (GSE) design, operations, and development 



Essential Functions

Physical Requirements

Will be required to climb stairs to access equipment for troubleshooting. Climbing ladders and platforms will be necessary. Will be required to wear hearing protection, eye protection and other associated personal protective equipment. Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing. Physical requirements are sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures.  Must be able to work in tight confined space areas. Must be able to work at heights.

 Work Environment

All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and Company safety standards. Will be required to work inside and outside throughout the test complex. Position requires daily individual to travel to different areas on site. Walking on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt/sand is required to access various locations on the facility.

 Equipment and Machines

Cranes and other heavy equipment such as crane carriers, Hi-Rangers, man lift platforms, hydraulic lifts, spider staging, converter dollies, cargo lift trailers, and tractor/trailers. Operate computer terminals, personal computers, and related computer peripheral equipment to maintain/adjust database logs and records, print documents and record work performance. Personal computer, scanner, copy machine, telephone, laser printer, fax machine, and other office equipment including desk supplies.

 Attendance

Work assignments are normally 8 hours shifts, 5 consecutive days per week. Must be dependable and punctual. Occasional overtime, sometimes with short notice, is required to meet demanding schedule

If offered a position, proof of U.S. Citizenship or Legal Permanent Resident/Green Card holder of the United States is required. Needs to have clear, concise, and accurate communication skills. Must have ability to work well with office staff and customer representatives. Government security clearance may be required in the future. Must be able to travel to support position requirements. This may include travel to and from customer location, which may involve airline travel. In some cases, accommodations can be made for POV, if necessary. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others. Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relations with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.
