Senior Mechanical Engineer – Sustaining
Senior Mechanical Engineer – Sustaining Job Summary: The future of solar is happening here and now, and it’s your opportunity to shine! You will lead our advancements in tracker product vision, innovation, enhancements, and improvements, as you drive our next-generation products and features. Working with multiple levels of management, engineering, and other departments, you will create and select state-of-the-art technologies and products. You will utilize tools such as computer aided design (CAD), finite element analysis (FEA) and design for manufacturability and assembly (DFMA) and failure modes and effects analysis (DFMEA). This position may require occasional evening and weekend hours. Some travel will be required. Key Job Responsibilities: + Be assigned parts and sub-assemblies to lead responses to engineering change requests. + Lead root cause analysis and related test requests and needed redesign to address field failures. + Lead other engineers on programs and projects when needed. + Provide clear direction to cross-functional teams with uncompromising drive to meet program targets. + Lead system level assigned efforts supporting improvement or modification to installed product. + Represent engineering in developing/managing the product road map for assigned product. + Incorporate increased ‘design for manufacturing’ in existing or new part development. + Report status of assigned programs at various levels of the organization. + Generate all design review records and all required design analysis to support the part design. + Develop design record documents in compliance with company requirements. + Create Design Requirements Documents (DRD) based on Market Requirements Documents (MRD) created by Product Management. + Create plans for component and system tests and interpret results to demonstrate that designs meet requirements. + Provide mentoring to developing engineers. + Create documents and presentations supporting stage gate reviews. + Read and process engineering documents, including process design guidelines, manufacturing drawings, and engineering best practices guides. + Lead activities to optimize and drive the engineering process for new product development projects, developing operating strategies, plans or procedures. + Create design concepts using SolidWorks and analyze them for suitability using DFMA, FMEA, FEA, etc. as appropriate. + Work with Mechanical Designers to create detailed CAD models and drawings. + Develop timelines and cost estimates and appraise management of performance to plan. + Work with the Quality dept. to develop inspection and test plans for supplier qualification of new components and sub-assemblies. + Assess reliability, safety, performance, and risk of new designs & methodologies; coordinate and communicate development schedules and compatibility or design issues throughout the team continuously. + Oversee testing and theoretical analysis of products to determine product safety and efficacy. + Travel to project sites, labs, suppliers, as required. + Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: + Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline + 10+ years of experience developing mechanical components and systems for new products. + 8+ years of experience performing mechanical engineering hand-calculations + 8+ years design experience designing structural components and hardware, gearing and/or drivetrains. + 8+ years of experience utilizing FEA, DFMA and design for cost in the development of new products. + 5+ years of experience using 3D CAD software + 5+ years of experience defining design validation tests + 4+ years working in an environment with Stage Gate Product Development Processes + 2+ years of experience using SolidWorks + 10+ years of experience using Microsoft Office Suite Preferred qualifications: + Ability to effectively work on multiple projects concurrently. + Excellent communication and team building skills. + Organizational and time-management skills + Experience in the solar industry + Design and component experience across multiple fabrication methods for steel, aluminum, and polymers. + Ability to work in a fast paced, smaller company environment.
