The Opportunity

As a Boiler & Air Quality Engineer, your role is to provide project support and expertise in boiler & air quality equipment. You will have the opportunity to: 

Work on diverse projects with talented colleagues to deliver solutions for clients’ needs. Many projects serve the power industry, but clients include those from the oil & gas, mining, steel, water, and other industries. The projects can range from targeted studies that require intensive analysis done with select colleagues, to large projects that require teamwork with dozens of colleagues across the world to design and construct a client’s facility. Help lead and mentor younger engineers to develop their professional growth. Develop your own personal growth, working on multiple types of equipment and serve in various roles in projects. The Boiler and Air Quality Team is part of Black & Veatch’s Equipment Group, which serves as subject matter specialists for much of the industrial equipment procured in our projects. This role is specific to the Boiler and Air Quality Team, especially in the near term, but over the course of your career at Black & Veatch, cross-training with other equipment is strongly encouraged. Perform conceptual design engineering analyses and prepare reports for new and retrofit steam generation equipment.     Evaluate, select, and implement appropriate designs for boilers and air quality equipment for a reliable, cost effective, and efficient operation.   Coordinate with equipment manufacturers to select the most technically acceptable design solutions.   Prepare equipment cost estimating and manhours for Conceptual, FEED and Detailed Design phases as well as retrofit analysis.   Prepare steam generation and/or air quality equipment and construction specifications.    Prepare bid evaluations and administer technical contracts.    Support coordination and witnessing of startup, commissioning, and performance/emissions testing of boiler & air quality equipment   Develop and maintain expertise with renewable fuels, oil and natural gas, and coal fired central station steam generators and auxiliaries, as well as HRSG’s downstream  of combustion turbines and gas and oil fired package boilers.   Develop and maintain expertise with established and emerging emissions control technologies including FGDs, SCRs, particulate collection, sorbent injection, carbon capture, and others.    Perform Pre-Inspection meetings, shop surveillance, attend inspections & testing on boiler & air quality equipment in the supplier’s shop.   Mentor and encourage junior staff by providing technical guidance, oversight, and review Collaborate with global project execution teams The Team

The Boiler and Air Quality team support large EPC projects and smaller service projects that are essential for our clients to meet their objectives. The team is a good mixture of experienced senior-level engineers and younger engineers with less than 5 years of experience. Our team currently has 10 members, and our larger Equipment Group has over 50 engineers.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong candidates will: 

Possess a broad set of skills and knowledge encompassing Rankine steam generators, HRSGs, combustion equipment, SCRs, fabric filters, flue gas desulfurization systems, and similar systems including auxiliaries related to power and other heavy industries.  Exhibit deep code knowledge of ASME Section I, VIII, NFPA 85, and PTC codes, EPA regulations/test methods and shall be capable of simple and complex analyses related to the design, specification, and applications engineering tasks associated with this equipment.      Have technical writing experience of specifications that are used as part of legal contracts and reports that summarize technical studies and evaluations. Be comfortable with data analysis to diagnose existing equipment and systems. Capably develop formal engineering calculations. Work well both in independent and team settings. Be able to travel for week-long trips a handful times a year as projects require.

They will also have experience in: 

Power, offshore marine, or other heavy industries   Selecting and working with all types of boiler and air quality equipment   The NBIC Code for pressure vessel repairs, alterations, and re-rates    Reading detailed project drawings and blueprints and technical interpretations   Attending and performing engineered equipment shop inspections and/or startup, commissioning, testing of boiler & air quality equipment   Selecting material and component for boiler & air quality equipment.  Minimum Qualifications Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 8 years related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.Certifications
