Senior Mechanical Engineer - Servos & Motors (Aviation)

Overview We are seeking a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer on the Aviation team in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for providing advanced engineering skills and project planning for servos, motors and actuators. Essential Functions Able to complete the most difficult tasks as a Master CAD-user (Solidworks, OnShape) including the completion of complex mechanical designs Knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, material requirements, material performance, material limitations, etc. Design of electromechanical rotary or linear actuators, associated fixtures and setups for testing and assembly, and drive components including gearing, drive screws, motors, etc. Work directly with vendors in part selection Specify test plans, mock up and test complex mechanical systems with complex performance requirements to validate and verify compliance with design requirements Manage basic tradeoffs, determine risk mitigation plans, determine project goal/objective feasibility, provide technical input to product development plans/concept documents, and drive process vendors to evaluate complex mechanical designs and understand risk Lead explorations of new technologies and make estimates on moderately complex mechanical designs including: tooling, part cost, and design time Knowledge of Industry and Garmin product qualification tests (environmental and others) Provide reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques and offer process improvements and author new procedures Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Aerospace Engineering AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) Demonstrated knowledge and capability to use CAD software for completing complex mechanical designs Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills Desired Qualifications Experience working with servos, actuators, throttles, motors, gears, bushings and clutches Electronic packaging design experience Garmin International is an equal opportunity employer.
