Senior Natural Resources Risk Engineer

Role Purpose

The main function of the job is to carry out risk appraisals of underwriting submissions and undertake risk / loss prevention surveys of the operation of industrial plants including property damage and business interruption assessments. This will include but not be limited to refining, petrochemical, chemical, biofuels, etc.; to ensure compliance with CHUBB Natural Resources Engineering Strategy. The role will include liaison with a wider range of customer groups including underwriters and importantly clients and their insurance brokers, managing the engineering input from early concept of new facilities through design, construction to operational phase. 

Key Responsibilities

Provide risk management advice, using effective and objective communication to both internal and external customer groups.  Complete pre-bind peer review with the underwriter based on the fundamentals of the risk using the Chubb Energy Risk Fundamentals Assessment (RFA) tool.  Complete pre-bind Risk Performance Indicators (RPI) assessments of underwriting submissions.  Conduct risk surveys for clients and compile engineering reports for Chubb, market underwriters and assured. Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of technological and operational developments in the energy sector.  Support the underwriter in discussions with the client, broker and broker’s engineers.  Develop and maintain continuous professional engineering knowledge and resource within the areas of expertise. Analyse claims in the region to draw conclusions and feed the lessons learned back into the underwriting process.  Develop and improve communication effectiveness and manage relationships to maintain CHUBB’s credibility as the leading professional and ethical insurer to clients, brokers, and the insurance market.  Develop and prioritise objectives for delivering risk management programmes in association with underwriters and the insureds’ management and brokers.  Develop a continuous improvement philosophy in respect of the team and workflow management.  Develop and broaden knowledge outside of core expertise enabling and assisting the underwriting and claims functions through education and training. 

Qualifications

Knowledge in midstream, downstream and heavy industry, including, but not limited to, refining, petrochemical, chemical, pulp & paper, biofuels, gas/crude pipelines and fuel storage. The candidate is expected to keep up to date with technological advances in the industry. Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience gained primarily in operation and /or maintenance in the downstream industry (or similar) and/or associated insurance industry with progressive responsibility. Hold relevant professional qualifications in Fire Engineering, Risk Management, Process Safety etc. Insurance engineering experience gained with a recognised lead insurer or reinsurer would be preferred but not essential. Academic record: Engineering degree preferred. BSc Chemical Engineering or appropriate equivalent such as BSc Mechanical Engineering or BSc Process Engineering. Excellent communication and negotiating skills with ability to work both on own initiative and as an effective team member. Language: English and Spanish. Portuguese is desirable. Other: Good interpersonal skills are important to build relationships with both Chubb’s clients and brokers. Travel Requirements. The appointed engineer will be expected to travel on a regional basis to survey risks underwritten by Chubb. Expected time away on surveys will be up to 60 days per annum (to be agreed). The recruit should be prepared to be away on surveys for up to 2 weeks at a time (on occasion) although most risk surveys will be of 3 to 5 days duration.
