Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MOD Type-31 Frigate and have secured contracts for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting exports of frigates, the engineering team is actively working on other ship newbuild and life extension programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers.

The role
As a Senior Naval Architect, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This is a prestigious position within our complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs through concept and early-stage design as well as supporting the bidding process.
Day-to-day, you’ll you will be responsible for developing the delivery of technical solutions across outfitting and arrangements, from concept design studies, new build bid submissions to final vessel acceptance.
Produce technical reports and other documentation and contribute to improvements in quantity standards of outputs. Support design teams throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of design. Support the development of junior team members to aid both their effective working, and their development. Develop innovative design solutions and processes as well as produce substantiation reports for tasks undertaken including stability assessment, concept designs etc.
In addition, you will belong to the wider engineering capability group and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within the naval architecture discipline with a focus on longer term career development.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2 days in the office/onsite and 3 days working from home.
Essential experience of the Senior Naval Architect
Experience in the naval/marine industry. Experience of using a variety of Naval Architecture design packages e.g. 2D & 3D CAD, stability.
Qualifications for the Senior Naval Architect
Either Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an Engineering discipline with extensive practical design experience in outfitting and ship design You will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and either hold Chartered engineer status or working towards Chartered engineering status.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
