Founded by ex-Apple Product and Engineering leaders, ASSA ABLOY Level is redefining the smart home with technology that is simple, intuitive, useful, and invisible. At ASSA ABLOY Level, we take a unique approach to designing products - one that shifts focus from what we make to how we make it and who we make it for. It’s an approach that results in elegant and unique solutions, raising the bar for the entire smart home ecosystem.
Having recently joined ASSA ABLOY, a global leader in access solutions, ASSA ABLOY Level is positioned to accelerate innovation and expand our reach even further. This partnership strengthens our ability to deliver world-class smart home experiences while maintaining the vision and design excellence that have always set us apart.
About the role:
As a Software Engineer on our Platform team, you will tackle complex system design challenges to build and enhance the backbone of our platform. You'll design and implement scalable, fault-tolerant services that process high-volume real-time data, ensure synchronization across hundreds of thousands of IoT devices, and deliver seamless user experiences to hundreds of thousands of residents and property managers.
Projects our Platform team is working on:
Pioneering a new device platform: Architect the foundation for ASSA ABLOY Level's expansion into video doorbells and future smart home devices, creating a robust ecosystem that will support third-party integrations and open up new possibilities in home automation.
Building scalable data analytics pipelines: Develop robust systems to process and analyze large amounts of IoT telemetry data, enabling us to derive actionable insights and improve our products continuously.
Creating a cutting-edge device management platform: Architect a system that allows for safe, observable, and incremental rollouts of software updates to hundreds of thousands of IoT devices, ensuring reliability and performance at scale.
These projects offer exciting challenges in distributed systems, real-time data processing, and large-scale IoT device management. You'll have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the future of smart home technology.
We're looking for engineers who can break down these ambiguous problems, design elegant solutions, and drive them from prototype to production. You'll collaborate closely with other engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to define the future of our platform.
Our tech stack includes Golang, Python, Kubernetes, Kafka, Redis, PostgreSQL, AWS Lambda, and more. We're looking for engineers who are excited to learn new technologies and contribute to our evolving architecture.
What you'll do:
Design and implement: Contribute to the architecture of our core platform services, focusing on scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability. Participate in technical discussions and help shape the implementation of new features.
Solve challenging problems: Address complex issues in distributed systems that handle real-time data processing at a scale of hundreds of events per second, device synchronization, and IoT security. Ensure the robustness and resilience of all services.
Write high-quality code: Develop clean, efficient, and well-tested code. Contribute to shared libraries and set coding standards for excellence.
Collaborate and communicate: Engage with cross-functional teams to precisely define requirements, explore technical possibilities, and deliver high-impact features. Communicate your designs and decision-making process clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Own and deliver: Take full ownership from design through deployment to ongoing operation, making informed, data-driven decisions and adapting based on operational feedback.
Uplevel the team: Mentor and develop junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, continuous improvement, and psychological safety.
Qualifications required to succeed in this role:
System design and architecture: Solid understanding of designing, building, and operating scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems. For senior roles, we expect expertise in this area.
Coding and problem-solving: Strong coding skills in one or more of Go, Python, Java, or C++. Our primary services are written in Go and our integration tests in Python, and we are open to engineers with backgrounds in other languages who are excited to learn and work with Go and Python. Solid problem-solving abilities and experience in writing maintainable, testable code are essential. A good understanding of data structures and algorithms is required.
Software engineering practices: Experience in building and maintaining production systems. Knowledge of version control systems, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and automated testing techniques. Familiarity with observability practices, including monitoring and logging.
Communication skills: Ability to articulate technical details and trade-offs clearly, ensuring effective collaboration across diverse teams.
User-centric design philosophy: Commitment to developing solutions that focus on user needs, enhancing usability and overall satisfaction.
Growth mindset: Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and challenges. For mid-level roles, we value potential and a strong desire to grow into more complex responsibilities.
Location and work environment:
This position is open to candidates anywhere within the US and is fully remote. If you're local to Redwood City, CA, or visiting the area, you're welcome to use our office space. We provide support to our remote team members to ensure they have the tools and resources needed to succeed.
You'll be part of a small, collaborative team that works closely with cross-functional partners in Product, Design, and Operations. At Level, we foster a culture of innovation and continuous learning.
More about ASSA ABLOY Level:
When we look around our homes today, we see opportunity. We see “smart” products that lack utility and connected devices that push us further apart. We see consumers with high expectations, current standards set too low, and products that simply fail to deliver.
ASSA ABLOY Level Inc. is re-inventing the standard. We’re redefining “smart”, to center around thoughtfulness, practicality, and the people who make the problem worth solving. We approach product design with a blank slate, zero assumptions, and an open-mind because the way a problem is defined sets the stage for its solution. We couple deep expertise with unbridled curiosity, because to us “smart” means simple, intuitive, and useful.
We start with empathy, take new perspectives, and challenge existing standards. People are at the heart of what we do, and respecting their style, choices, and preferences is the first step to uncovering a thoughtful solution that truly improves their daily lives. After all, we’re not just designing products for a house, we are designing them for the people who make it a home.
At ASSA ABLOY, we believe our greatest asset is our people, and we strive for competitive compensation plans to attract the best talent. The salary range for this position is $110k-$260k + bonus. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate of what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we take into consideration a broad scope of factors, including but not limited to: skill sets, experience and training, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
