Senior Product Owner - Energy Orchestration

Job Summary Duke Energy and the energy industry is embarking on an energy transition that will fundamentally change energy generation and consumption. During this energy transition, Duke Energy will continue to operate and maintain current generation assets such as natural gas, nuclear, and solar, but will also need to integrate advanced, emerging technologies into its generation portfolio. Part of this growing portfolio includes orchestrating customer-sited devices such as smart thermostats, hot water heaters, energy storage and EV charging that, when combined, can provide additional locational capacity and energy value at the edge of the grid in the form of a Virtual Power Plant. To achieve this goal, we are looking for a Sr. Product Owner who is experienced in the energy sector and eager to help develop and execute grid edge customer-facing pilots. The Sr. Product Owner will be responsible for designing, delivering and managing the lifecycle of these pilots from inception to execution. This role will lead collaboration with various support organizations including ETO, Solutions Development, Demand Side Management, Customer Prototype Lab, Marketing, Sourcing, Digital Transformation and other key stakeholders to build defendable pilot business cases, analyze technical and financial viability, and create robust pilot test plans to drive the transition to sustainable energy solutions. This position is responsible for monitoring grid-edge technology providers and new entrants and identify opportunities for strategic pilot partnerships. This position regularly tracks and communicates critical developments in the market, such as the activities of other utilities and nontraditional competitors, monitors policy and utility program trends specific to grid-edge to be considered in pilot development and evaluation. This individual will be responsible for translating pilot outcomes to support the evaluation of impacted processes and support business-readiness implementation strategies that will inform the broader Energy Orchestration supporting teams on requirements for an enterprise-wide Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) platform. Ideal candidates possess an ability to meet a variety of non-routine challenges, exceptional communication skills, a foundational knowledge of customer programs and operations, financial analysis and modeling concepts, and a curiosity for energy innovation. Job Duties and Responsibilities + Defines and manages pilot roadmap and supporting stakeholder documentation. + Develop and communicate detailed business cases for pilot projects, including financial modeling, ROI analysis, and risk assessments. + Deliver the implementation plans, communication plans, change management and transition management to ensure a successful acceptance and transition to the business and/or operations as the new solution scales. + Collaborate with Sourcing & Legal to negotiate contractual agreements in strategic partnerships to protect intellectual property rights. + Build financial models to forecast the economic performance of pilot initiatives and to determine the viability of stacking various use cases from a techno-economic perspective. + Conduct external market research on industry trends, technology developments, and potential partnership opportunities. + Analyze and report on vendor partnership opportunities, evaluating alignment with business needs and strategic goals. + Support and help lead regulatory research, documentation and compliance work, ensuring that pilot projects align with industry regulations and standards. + Collaborate to develop requirements & specifications, go to market plans, customer journey maps, process flows, support regulatory filings, data requests, training materials, operational budget, and operational playbooks. + Build, groom and prioritize the pilot roadmap and pipeline, continuously managing expectations with relevant stakeholders, including the senior leadership team. + Gather market feedback through user interactions, focus groups, and by performing industry research to support future development. Basic/Required Qualifications + Bachelors degree + 4 years related work experience + In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) AND 4 year(s) related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 8 year(s) related work experience Preferred Qualifications + Ability to meet a variety of non-routine challenges + Ability to communicate complex and innovative concepts to a new product development team + A foundational knowledge of energy industry and specifically the electric utility industry + A command of strategic analysis concepts, technology readiness and commercialization, and a working knowledge of financial analysis concepts + Strong internal and external network of contacts + Entrepreneurial with a strong inclination towards action, preferably with experience in system operations + Clear passion and ability to identify possibilities to innovate + Ability to be self-directed and to proactively anticipate problems and seek opportunities. + Excellent communication skills including the ability to build relationships and effectively influence across all management and organizational levels + Strong understanding of agile methodologies + Experience with relevant new product or technology development experience working in a fast-paced environment + Experience operating in an environment driven by KPIs where you have the accountability to determine the best course of action to meet your goals Desired Qualifications + Masters degree in Engineering or Business Administration + In addition to desired degree, 7 or more years working in the utility industry Working Conditions + Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period.
