This is a permanent, full-time, exempt-level position.  

Position Description:

ADM is seeking a Senior Protection and Controls Engineer to support the development of protective relay design associated with the Generation and Transmission and Distribution assets.  The successful candidate will be part of the Electrical Systems group and will be tasked within the North American geographic region with primary focus within Nebraska, Ohio, Iowa and Illinois.

The Senior Protection and Controls Engineer will provide technical leadership and expertise on various Generation, Transmission and Distribution (T&D) relaying applications and is responsible for defining protection architecture, functional criteria and specifications for relaying and control schemes associated with the Generation and T&D Assets.

The successful candidate will have a strong technical background in Generation and T&D system protection and control and will have extensive experience using system modeling tools such as ETAP,ASPEN, CAPE, SKM, etc.

Primary Responsibilities:

   Improving Electrical Asset Reliability:
 Lead Protection and Control Team in the design, development and review of protective relay settings, basis for relay settings, IED data maps and SCADA points listsDelegating, planning, prioritizing and reviewing the work of other engineers will be criticalIdentify, develop and recommend Protection and Controls maintenance and testing requirements associated with the Generations and T&D Assets and ensure that these requirements are aligned with industry standards and best practicesFamiliar with NERC PRC and CIP standardsDevelop asset registers for the protection system with the appropriate hierarchy and attributes to facilitate uploading to the computerized maintenance management systemLead the investigation and analysis of system instability and major system disturbances and develop/ review recommendations with respect to corrective actionsEnsure the smooth real-time operation of the power system by performing and analyzing technical studies and data, developing strategies and alternatives, and establishing and documenting operating proceduresPerform audits of critical protection systems within the computerized maintenance management system to ensure that the appropriate testing and maintenance is completed within the industry recommended timingProvide report of Protection and Control System performance relative to the company’s established KPIs
   Capital Project Support:
 Works within a multi-discipline team to develop and/ or review efficient and reliable electrical design packages for medium and high voltage electrical infrastructureLead the protection design for all Capital Projects and define relay protection functionality and schemes in alignment with industry standards to satisfy power system reliability requirementsReview the relay settings, logic diagrams (including GOOSE messaging diagrams), and operational descriptions supplied by the contractor for all capital projectsEnsure that the protection assets associated with capital projects are appropriately catalogued, the hierarchy developed and maintenance/ testing requirements created that are aligned with manufacturer’s recommendations/ industry standardsWork with the CMMS team to ensure that developed hierarchy and maintenance/ testing plans are uploaded into the CMMSEnsure that commissioning documents are comprehensive and aligned with previously authored Protection and Control commissioning standard/ specificationMaintains complete project documentation with respect to relay settings, engineering studies and calculations, all design packages, as-built requirements and return data informationEnsure that during infrastructure handover (from project to operations); the appropriate commissioning documents, O&M manuals and procedures and confirmation of CMMS upload are transferred to the operations team as part of the project closure and transfer process
   Risk Management:
 Develop/ review contingency plans and short-term operating procedures to address non-standard system operations.Provide technical leadership and serves as a subject matter expert, delivering professional and technical guidance on programs, projects and initiatives both within and outside the department.Provides technical guidance to Engineers, consultants and technical support staff. Efficiently manage resources and develop innovative solutions to address engineering challenges.Mentor and supports team members, offering guidance and encouraging initiative while helping them develop as engineers and technical leaders. Minimum Requirements:

   Education:
 Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering
   Length of experience:
 5+ years’ of experience in power systems engineering, design, and implementation of electric utility protection and control systems
   Other:
 Expertise in the design, application, and implementation of transmission and generation protection and control systems for utility substations up to 138 kV. This includes experience with overhead and cable transmission lines, transformers, shunt and series capacitors, and circuit breakersDemonstrate the critical thinking skills necessary for investigating, analyzing, and resolving a range of engineering issues, including the unexpected maloperation of protective devicesDemonstrate a thorough understanding of the industry standards that governs the selection, testing and performance protective relaying schemesDemonstrate a thorough understanding of safety procedures required when entering electrical substations or other infrastructure that housed high voltage and medium voltage electrical apparatusWorking knowledge of downstream electrical elements including but not limited to MMCs, motors, switch gears, switch boards and electrical panelsExperience with project management principles managing the engineering component (scope, schedule, cost, technical risk) of large and/or technically complex projectsProficient in the use of Microsoft suite of products(Excel, Word and Power Point)
   Travel:
 Travel to manufacturing facilities as needed (approximately 35%)
   Preferred Certifications:
 License Professional Engineer (P.E. or P.Eng)Project Management Professional
