The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisors Carsten Schultz in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. There will be preparative scale chemistry work, biophysical characterization, and mass spectrometry work involved. Chemistry duties in the Schultz lab include synthesizing, purifying, analyzing, and testing compounds and completing various research aims related to them.
Function/Duties of Position Perform chemical synthesis, purification, spectroscopy, confocal microscopy biochemical analyses, including PCR, western blots, and imaging studies. Contribute to experimental design and overall direction of the project; help to identify and implement the most appropriate methods. Train newcomers to the lab in experimental procedures.Documentation and data management: Maintain complete and accurate laboratory records of study procedures and results; back up data regularly, assist with analysis of results. Assist the PI with experimental design and data analysis.Communication: Regularly report experiment progress to supervisor and other team members; participate in lab meetings; assist with presentation of study results in abstracts, papers, or presentations.This position description may not include all duties of this position and additional duties may be added at the direction of Carsten Schultz, Ph.D. Required Qualifications PhD in relevant field AND 1 year of relevant experience ORMaster's Degree in relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience ORBachelor's Degree in relevant field AND 9 years of relevant experienceMinimum 3 years of relevant experience after master’s degree or 5 years of experience after bachelor’s degree.
Relevant experience must include preparative organic synthesis at small and large scales, chromatography including HPLC, NMR data analysis, TLC.
Assists in planning experimental design and/or designing research standard operating procedures (SOPs). Assumes responsibility for specific components of research project and trains others. Demonstrates creativity and problem solving ability.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are required. Must have good communication skills and be able to work as part of a team. Exercises judgment in taking independent action, and seeks advice as necessary.
Assists in preparation of written reports and, as applicable, regulatory documentation.
Trains new lab staff in procedures and appropriate record keeping.
Preferred Qualifications PhD in Chemistry. Extensive experience in preparative organic synthesis.Working knowledge of Oracle for ordering.
