Job Description
Gilead Sciences has an excellent opportunity for a senior research associate with demonstrated gene-to-protein expertise in the Protein Therapeutics department. As part of our Protein Biochemistry team, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in drug discovery campaigns across Virology, Oncology, and Inflammation therapeutic areas. They will engineer, express, purify, and characterize high-quality proteins, contributing significantly to our mission. The candidate will independently assess and record protein quality attributes using biophysical analytics and routinely present and discuss results with critical stakeholders in cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Small- and large-scale expression and purification (milligrams scale)
Protein Analytics
Protocol development for challenging purifications
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Collaborating across the team and functions
Solid background in protein sciences and biochemistry
Timely and detailed record-keeping
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree with 4+ years or Master’s with 2+ years of related experience with hands-on experience in molecular biology and protein expression using E. coli, insect, and mammalian expression systems is required. Preferred experience: 5+ yrs with B.S. or 3+ years with M.S. of industry experience.
Expertise in protein purification using AKTA instruments is essential.
Experience with automated and high throughput purifications is ideal.
Candidate must demonstrate the ability to independently develop and troubleshoot purification protocols and assess protein quality using biophysical analytic tools (SDS-PAGE analysis, Western blot, FPLC, HPLC, MALS, DLS, DSF, Mass Spectrometry).
Familiarity with structure-based design and engineering of proteins (sequence alignment, protein structure analysis using modeling software) is ideal.
Strong motivation to work independently and in a team environment and solve challenging problems creatively.
Ability to multi-task and excel in a fast-paced team environment
Attention to detail, accurate record keeping, and good lab citizenship practices are essential.
