Senior Risk Consulting Engineer - Power

The Role 

Willis Towers Watson is currently seeking to recruit a Senior Power (Conventional & Renewables) Risk Consulting Engineer to join our rapidly expanding Asia Risk & Analytics team. 

The role will involve conducting insurable risk surveys for a wide range of regional clients in and associated with the power industry including but not limited to power, utility and renewables sectors along with providing risk & insurance advisory, risk assessment, data analytics, loss prevention and technical claims support.  The role requires a working knowledge of power technology project design, construction, commissioning, operations and maintenance, HSE, risk engineering, fire and life safety systems plus an understanding of project and construction risk management techniques.  

Key responsibilities include:

Working knowledge of power & renewables technologies, including steam turbines, gas turbines, hydro plants, wind turbines (onshore & offshore), solar (ground and floating), electrical systems (generators, transformers, distribution & transmission systems), and battery energy storage systems (BESS).  IT literacy to include general office systems such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Access (or similar).   Experience of technical simulation packages for process modelling, risk assessment, project execution purposes as is relevant to field of expertise. Enhanced verbal communication skills for engaging with colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders at multiple levels within the organization, and for articulating our client’s Risk Engineering value proposition. Enhanced written communication skills, both for routine communications and for crafting the market survey reports. Comfortable in conducting client facing training and seminars related to risk management  Familiarity and eagerness to develop knowledge in international benchmarking codes and standards (e.g. IEC, IEEE, NFPA, FMDS and etc.) Willing to carry out desk top design review and validation of safety and fire systems. Keen eye for hazard identification with ability to relate risk probability and severity matrix. Ability to think outside the box in risk resolution techniques. Coordinate and manage the execution of underwriting surveys to the satisfaction of clients and insurers Prepare underwriting information and risk profile reports to assist in the placement of client insurance programmes.  Reports will contain key understanding of the hazards at facilities and how the management team are controlling/mitigating their impact. Presentation of loss calculations is also required; Develop risk improvement recommendations that are clear, appropriate and are fairly balanced between the interests of clients and insurers; Calculate loss expectancies within company guidelines across a range of industries and insurance lines; Ensure that all reports and other deliverables are prepared and ready in a timely manner; Provide technical support to clients and the WTW broking team(s) across a range of issues relating to good industry practices; Forensic analysis of industry related claims to identify the cause and where necessary, lead the technical aspect of the investigation, calling in other expert support and supporting claims advocates to ensure full and timely settlement Maintain all risk management team tracking tools such as schedules and planning spread sheets; Maintain technical competency in key industrial sectors and keep up-to-date with risk management developments (e.g. attend seminars, review technical publications, etc.); Represent WTW professionally on business trips and in meetings; Comply with all WTW company policies (e.g. Travel, Ethics, etc.); Any other duties commensurate with position or level of responsibility.

The Requirements

Degree (or equivalent) in engineering or related discipline and/or related risk management qualifications and/or relevant professional accreditationsPower industry experience with a broad range of design, construction, O&M or risk consulting experience to senior level within AsiaPreferable with prior training and/or experience in Risk Engineering with specific technical expertise in power industry, fire, life safety and security protection techniques provided by a leading underwriterComfortable with travelling extensivelySelf-starter, with good interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively relate to individuals at all levels – from site technicians up to company CEOsProven ability to write detailed reports of a varied technical nature in both EnglishPrior experience of carrying out power insurable risk surveysExperience of working with TILs, SIL, LOPA, NFPA and other industry related codes, standards and guidanceWorking knowledge of fire protection and detection systemsKnowledge of natural catastrophe risks
