SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Provides advanced polymeric science and chemical expertise to support various complex projects.

Essential Functions Performed

Conduct extractables and leachables (E&L) testing on medical devices, components, and packaging systems for regulatory filings, requests and compliance with industry standards (ISO 10993-18, EU MDR 2017/745). Develop and validate E&L test methods including determining appropriate extraction techniques, LC/MS and GC/MS chromatographic conditions, AET calculations, performing mass spectrometry data analysis and interpretation thereof to identify and quantify E&L compounds. Write and execute protocols, process data, compile results, and write final E&L reports for regulatory submissions.

Supports the design of new chemical and materials technologies across the company’s medical device portfolio.

Develops test methods to verify hypothesis of chemical and materials technologies.

Designs and develops test methods to predict performance of polymeric materials, products and technologies.

Provides chemical and polymeric materials support for the development of new products by:

• Identifying/selecting materials based on product requirements, vendor/material selection.

• Developing processing parameters.

• Developing test methods.

• Troubleshooting to refine existing products or substitution of discontinued materials through the regulatory process.

Identifies opportunities and initiates research on new materials and technologies to provide possible cost reductions, performance improvements, and/or enable the development of new products.

Works with internal/external customers to develop needed materials, as needed.

Prepares and assist in the submission and review of polymeric materials related patent disclosures. Evaluates work results, analyzes causes for variances and recommends courses of action.

Provides technical direction / inputs to Project Teams to assist in decision making.

Mentors, provides direction or manages more junior scientific staff within the company.

Functions in project leadership role, as needed.

Performs other duties and tasks as required.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or related technical field and ten years of related experience; or a Master’s Degree with eight years of previous related experience.

•Extensive LC/MS and GC/MS experience required (experience with ThermoFischer Scientific instruments a plus).

• Ability to independently apply analytical skills and scientific technical principles in problem solving and development.

• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to work effectively as a team member.

• Working knowledge of United States and international standards as applicable to the department.

• Ability to manage projects efficiently and effectively and meet deadlines in a timely manner.

• Strong written/verbal communication skills.

• Demonstrated computer skills preferably spreadsheets, word processing, database and other applicable software programs.
