Senior Scientist - Architectural coatings/ Waterborne Coating Technology

Overview

Axalta Coating Systems is seeking a waterborne coating formulator to join our Exterior Building Products Technology Group in Fridley, Minnesota. The Senior Scientist will advance our fundamental understanding of architectural coatings in support of Axalta’s growth initiatives. This includes product design, development, enhancements & modifications to improve coating performance and reduce cost, while also improving efficiency during manufacturing and application. The role of Senior Scientist will report into the Exterior Building Products Team leader.  

Responsibilities:

Lead technical programs related to product development and customer support within a team environmentResponsible for development and implementation of new waterborne coating product formulations, including initial definition with the customer, scale-up with manufacturing and optimization of performance at the customer siteWork as an active member of cross functional project teams with Manufacturing, Product Management, IT and SalesInteract with others in R&D, Sales and Marketing to propose new projects targeted to provide growth opportunities in traditional and adjacent marketsApply statistical methods to investigate problems and analyze results Organize objectives, set milestones, and deliver results against aggressive timelines

Education:

BS/MS/PhD Degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science or Coatings is preferred. Serious consideration will be given to degreed candidates in other science related fields with applicable architectural waterborne coating formulation experience. 

Qualifications:

Must have at least 5 years of practical R&D / Chemistry experienceMust have architectural coatings formulation experienceAn understanding of chemical manufacturing as it relates to coatings, resins or polymers is a requirement.Understanding of waterborne coatings technology, including formulation of exterior and interior systems preferredKnowledge of resins, cross linkers, additives and pigmentsAbility to develop and/or implement coating characterization testing methods, calibrate & run instrumentation and interpret resultsKnowledge of design of experiment (DOE) techniquesExcellent communication skills (verbal and written), problem solving capabilities and the ability to work both independently and as a part of a teamWillingness and ability to travel up to 20% of the time with possible international travelAbility to occasionally lift and handle 50 lbs
