Job Description
The Gastroenterology group within AbbVie’s Immunology therapeutic area seeks a Senior Scientist I/II to join our GI group in Worcester, MA. This position will play a key role in the development of complex in vitro models to support late-stage internal programs. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in broad immunological and cell biological mechanisms that drive inflammation in the context of autoimmune disease. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with primary cell culture and complex in vitro models and a track record of applying these models to advance drug discovery programs. The ideal candidate will have people and project management experience. The applicant should be a creative, research driven scientist interested in combining a knowledge of autoimmune disease with complex in vitro models to advance drug discovery.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for the development of complex in vitro models that mimic the pathophysiology of immune mediated diseases with a focus on IBDIdentify, internalize, develop, and optimize new methods and technologies to deliver in vitro models of IBD using commercial and custom gut on a chip systemsUtilize complex in vitro models to drive the advancement of IBD therapeuticsIdentify and solve technical problems independently, conceive and implement novel experimental approachesGenerate data in a timely manner and effectively communicate results internally across departments and at internal and external scientific conferences; may author or co-author peer-reviewed scientific papers or patentsEffectively and accurately record experimental resultsA strong team player in a cross functional collaborative environment thriving for world class excellence and maintains strong working relationships with internal, global, and external collaboratorsSupervise 1-2 scientists, evaluate team performance, and accountable for effective performance of teamQualifications
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically, 12 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, PhD and typically 4 years of experience.Extensive experience with primary cell cultures and in vitro cell based assays is required. Experience specifically with primary intestinal epithelial cells/intestinal organoids, intestinal fibroblast and human immune cells is preferredExperience in complex in vitro models (ie spheroids, organoids, organ-on-a-chip, microfluidics) is preferred. Experience with disease modeling using primary cells and microphysiological systems a plusExperience with imaging technologiesExperience managing direct reports and providing performance evaluations and development opportunities preferredProgram management experience preferredAbility to build relationships and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams in a highly matrixed organization.Established history of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.Able to work both independently and as part of a team when requiredDemonstrate excellent communication skills and specifically illustrate strong oral and written technical communications.Demonstrated problem-solving skills and capability to overcome complex issues.Must have a “results-oriented” work ethic and a positive “can-do” attitude with a strong sense of urgency and self-motivated desire to achieve.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
