Amazon’s network is a key differentiator for Amazon Cloud Computing and Web Services (AWS), enabling the global operation of thousands of applications across millions of servers worldwide. The AWS Networking team develops and operates the global network platform for all of Amazon, superseding a network that originally evolved using industry-standard technologies and designs. Our teams support all aspects of connectivity to/from Amazon and the outside world, as well as connectivity between Amazon’s data centers and services.

This opportunity exists within the AWS Internet Edge team, where we build (SDN) software controllers which operate the network. As part of a new multi-year initiative, we are building a new software-based network controller, which leverages the business rules to optimize all the traffic that exits the network, and it works with other software controllers to steer traffic over optimal paths, and in doing so increase the network availability and performance. This is a unique opportunity to build and innovate on one of the world’s largest networks that delivers terabits of traffic each day for our customers.

In this role, you will contribute to the development of the control and/or data planes of the software based network controller, help define the roadmap and technical planning, participate in architecture decisions, design reviews, and represent our team to AWS leadership. You will mentor engineers, and grow them to embody best practices. Within the team, you will serve as a technical leader who defines the group’s priorities and vision. You will collaborate with teams within Networking and AWS to create the best-in-class solutions for our customers worldwide!

Key job responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain and improve software
- Investigate design approaches, prototype new technology and evaluate technical feasibility
- Write high quality distributed system software and perform peer code-reviews
- Perform development and maintenance of key system features
- Drive best practices and engineering excellence
- Provide technical direction to the team and identify areas of focus
- Establish architectural principles, selecting design patterns and mentoring team members on their appropriate application
- Create and review software design documentation and mentor junior engineers
- Create and review documentation and process regarding recurring issues, new standard operating procedures, knowledge transfer material, etc
