People come to Discord before, during, and after gaming, and we want to make that experience even better. The Social Layer of Gaming team is building the tools for game developers to make that happen by harnessing the power of Discord from right within their games. We believe that gaming is better when playing with your friends and aim to foster better and deeper relationships through that. This is also reflected in how we work! Our engineering culture believes that great teams are built through collaboration and trust. Come and join us!
What You’ll Be Doing
Design and build out core features for our audience of game developers. This could include anything from our C++ SDKs, our APIs, realtime infrastructure, or even in the UI. Whatever it takes to get the important thing done. Use your attention to detail to continually raise the quality bar of the software we write. Work with the other engineers on your team to write, review, and ship elegant and scalable code. You take pride in the fact that your code will be used by millions and millions of people! Be the lead on projects through the whole life cycle: including gathering requirements, mapping out its scope, building, and shipping it. Collaborate with our game developer partners to better understand their needs in order to improve our tools. This could mean hopping into partner meetings as a technical expert, answering questions in channels, and occasionally helping them design out a solution. Work with product managers, designers, and product marketers to cut through ambiguity and find the way forward. You’ll Thrive In This Role If...
You have experience with some parts of our tech stack: C++, Python, Elixir, Rust, or Typescript/React. Out of those, we spend most of our time in Python and C++, so experience there is more beneficial. You have 4-5 years experience as a software engineer. You have a sense for product and design. We don’t operate in silos, and you’ll be collaborating closely with cross-functional peers. You should be able to express opinions and collaborate to make something great. You take a holistic approach to problem solving. You believe in solving a problem from first principles rather than simply shipping a solution. You learn from your mistakes and work through obstacles with the rest of the team.Bonus Points
Experience with game development. Bonus bonus points if you’re familiar with Unity and/or Unreal. Experience with mobile development.
