The Senior Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist supports and implements the company’s Safety, Environmental, and Health Programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as corporate policies. Job Description

Department:  EHS

Location:  Thousand Oaks, CA

Reports To:  Associate Director, EHS

 

MAJOR ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Regulatory Compliance & Program Implementation:  

Collaborate with the Manager of Safety, Health, and Environmental to ensure compliance with EHS programs, including written policies, training, permits, and regulatory reporting. Develop and maintain programs to enhance safety, environmental awareness, and health standards.

 

Environmental Management:

Ensure compliance with wastewater, air quality, and hazardous/non-hazardous waste regulations. Manage proper waste disposal at all locations, conduct weekly inspections, and implement corrective actions as needed.

 

Support for Laboratory & Biosafety Programs:

Assist in developing and implementing biosafety protocols, including biological hazard assessments and biohazard waste management. Provide support for chemical hygiene plans, laboratory PPE protocols, and ergonomic evaluations. Participate in risk assessments specific to laboratory environments and biosafety considerations.

 

Safety Oversight:

Support safety programs, including Hazard Communication, Incident Reporting, Respiratory Protection, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and Hearing Conservation. Assist with noise and chemical air monitoring, fit testing, and periodic safety inspections.

 

 

Data Analysis & Reporting:

Analyze safety data and trends to prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders.

 

Program Development:

Contribute to the design and update of EHS programs to maintain compliance and effectiveness, with some focus on laboratory and biosafety considerations.

 

Hazard Analysis & Mitigation:

Assist in identifying hazards related to chemical, biological, and physical risks, and provide recommendations to mitigate or eliminate them.

 

Training & LMS Administration:

Develop and deliver employee training programs using adult learning principles and corporate methodologies. Support the administration of the site Learning Management System (LMS), including biosafety and lab safety training modules.

 

Incident Investigation:

Assist in investigations of safety, health, and environmental incidents using root cause analysis. Use and manage electronic incident reporting and CAPA tracking systems.

 

Cross-Department Collaboration:

Work closely with other departments, including research and development teams, to provide EHS support and address program gaps.

 

Regulatory Engagement:

Assist in preparing for and supporting regulatory audits and inspections, ensuring compliance and readiness.

 

Communication & Documentation:

Maintain EHS-related SharePoint and MS Teams pages. Support presentations on EHS topics to clients and regulatory representatives.

 

 

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS (Education, Behavioral, Professional & Technical Capabilities  Experience):

 

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science (Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Occupational Health or similar) (B.Sc.) with 4+ years of experience; orAssociate degree with 8+ years of experience; orHigh school diploma with 9+ years of experience

 

Preferred Qualifications

Exposure to laboratory safety programs, including chemical hygiene and biosafety protocols, is preferred.Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, and cGMP regulations, as well as basic knowledge of NIH and CDC biosafety guidelines.Proficiency with incident reporting and CAPA tracking systems.Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

Work is generally performed in an office environment with occasional entry into manufacturing environmentsConsists of frequent complete use, virtual and in person meetings, and interacting with cross functional teams

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to walk, sit, and stand frequently.Occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds, reach, climb, kneel, or move waste drums with a drum lifter.Capability to wear full-face respirators and Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPRs).

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

$115,000 to $143,000, depending on experienceMedical, Dental and Vision Life Insurance 401k Paid Time Off
