SR. RESEARCH STAFF TECHNICIAN
The Senior Research Staff Technician supports the AP&C-PSA technical service team and sales through customer support with lab testing and data analysis. Reports to Advanced Packaging and Converting – Pressure Sensitive Adhesives Sr. Technical Service Engineer.
SAFETY
· Actively promotes safe behavior in the workgroup and takes responsibility for personal safe lab operations.
· Active in several departmental safety initiatives such as participation on steering teams or making safety presentations (safety
topics, observations, reporting).
· Mentors new employees in the work group to practice safe working habits.
· Operates in compliance with site safety policies, including material handling and waste disposal.
KNOW HOW
· Associates degree in technology field + 10 years of relevant experience or high school education + 15 years of experience.
· Proficient with computer software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, presentations, etc.).
· Organizes and analyzes data to explain conclusions and outcomes internally and to customers. Communicates effectively,
both verbally and in writing.
· Develops and implements procedures as required.
· Applies practical understanding of basic scientific principles to analyze problems and recommend improvements.
· Utilizes mechanical expertise to support own experimental design, and serves as a resource for a large work group.
· Utilizes measuring devices, complex diagnostic equipment, and scientific reports.
· Develops test prototypes to improve performance in support of functional or experimental objectives and instructs others in
their applications.
· Demonstrates a commitment to performing lab work ethically and lawfully.
PROBLEM SOLVING
· Designs and carries out, from conception to finish, new procedures and methods to solve problems.
· Recognizes deviations from standard results, and independently resolves them.
· Proposes application of new test methods to provide new information.
· Able to analyze and organize data to explain conclusions.
· Uses mechanical expertise to design and construct unique experimental apparatus if needed to generate required data. Capable of programming measuring and data tracking software.
· Can independently survey existing technical/patent literature to determine prior art relating to the problem.
· Can distinguish root cause of problem from extraneous background information.
· Participates in project discussions with out-of-group participants.
ACCOUNTABILITY
· Interfaces mainly within local site, often across divisions, sometimes as technical expert. Interfaces directly with outside support organizations (contractors, vendors, etc.); Can participate as support in meetings with external organizations (customers, business unit, etc.) .
· Participates in planning of experiments or tests to provide answers to questions.
· Keeps up-to-date notebook. Writes reports summarizing results. Gives concise and accurate verbal summaries.
· Makes suggestions/proposals for improving existing procedures.
· Proposes schedules and timelines to meet requests set by the organization.
· Holds other support persons in the organization accountable for meeting schedules and providing results.
· Mentors/trains new or temporary persons in the organization.
· Active in relevant professional organizations.
· Has strong working relationships at department level, internal customers and support personnel. Often may act as a technical consultant across business units.
· Starts to develop customer contacts/ relationships on infrequent basis.
· Completes and documents technical service and application projects with supervision.
· Assists in the orientation, mentoring and development of junior technical staff.
· Assists in the training and orientation of new sales/business team members in product/technical areas.
· Participates in professional organizations related to area of technical expertise.
· Publishes reports for internal distribution.
· Understands internal customer needs and makes appropriate product and/or process recommendations to resolve problems.
· Prepares SOPs in uncovered areas for review and approval, acts as equipment owner overseeing and training
other users, and generally presents study findings in report form. Looked to as a mentor by junior technicians.
LEADERSHIP AND INFLUENCE
· Trains and mentors new employees in area of expertise and conducts training for customers and sales people.
· Can lead small departmental teams. May participate on multi-functional teams.
· Leads departmental development programs, meeting objectives and timelines.
· Takes on a technical leadership role in lab operations demonstrating ability to meet objectives and timelines.
