Senior Sustainability Specialist


The Senior Sustainability Specialist will be responsible for supporting the activities of the Global Sustainability team related to Maritime Decarbonization and other aspects of sustainability such as ESG reporting and GHG Accounting. The role requires the application of analytical and problem-solving skills to support various business initiatives and ensure that project deliverables are met. The Senior Sustainability Specialist will also be supporting the sustainability team scaling up existing services, capitalizing on new service or product opportunities, and identifying new revenue streams.

What You Will Do:

Support ABS clients’ decarbonization strategy initiatives through the execution of projects. Support the department's different projects, services, and other activities, specifically in the decarbonization as well as ESG and Carbon Accounting space, ensuring alignment with regulatory frameworks such as GRI, CSRD, TCFD, and other recognized standards. Maintain a solid understanding of emerging regulatory frameworks related to GHG emissions and waste streams. Support the department's different projects, services, and other activities. Interact with clients to perform services offered by the Global Sustainability team. Establish and manage client projects. Update and inform the Global Sustainability team on regulatory changes and their impact on ABS business. May develop methodologies, tools, and services related to GHG emissions and other areas of interest relating to the activities associated with the Global Sustainability Team. May conduct seminars and workshops related to the environmental performance of marine vessels and offshore units. Support the associated service delivery across all geographic locations of Sustainability. May perform an annual assessment of new service requirements. May develop associated Project Management plans and include them in annual budget preparations. Contribute to authoring ABS publications and thought leadership documents.  Maintain awareness of the overall ABS service portfolio and promote services/products when appropriate Work with organizational teams to develop capture strategies, proposals, and pricing as appropriate May provide strategic insights related to future business initiatives, market drivers, and competitor activities for inclusion in business planning May execute and drive sales strategies, meet or exceed sales and revenue targets Develop and maintain key client relationships with a focus on maintaining current work and expanding new business opportunities and prospects for new clients Attend industry events and conferences, and provide feedback and information on market and creative trends Identify opportunities for marketing campaigns within the area of responsibility that will lead to increased sales Submit reports as needed and ensure data is accurately entered and managed within the company’s CRM Works as a team member within the group, but will work autonomously most of the time

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

Requires a BSc in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on environmental performance and/ or business. MSc degree preferred.   Requires a minimum of eight (8 5) years of related engineering experience in a recognized research university, research institute, shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society. Previous experience in the field of maritime decarbonization and sustainability is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Be well familiar with the international and regional maritime decarbonization regulations and their impact to the industry. Understand the role that energy efficiency technologies and alternative fuels play in the decarbonization efforts of the maritime industry and support the department’s activities in this sector. Prior experience with ESG related topics as well as using various frameworks (GRI, SASB, CSRD, TCFD, ISSB) is highly desirable Advanced knowledge of GHG regulations, impacts, and technology transition. Experience with advanced use of MS Office. Commercial understanding of the new-building process, yards, and chartering processes. Must be capable of presenting and working with clients. Develop business insights through research and analysis. Ability to identify and provide regular updates and overviews on new leads and potential business opportunities. Track, interpret and analyze emerging legislation that will affect the industry and draw up transition plans. Ability to work well with others. Excellent communication skills (oral & written), enabling effective communication at multiple levels. Strong commitment to ethical business practices, in full accordance with relevant corporate policies. Ability to develop a working knowledge of ABS Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, and related instructions, as well as the ABS Employee Safety Policy.  Obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.

Reporting Relationships:

Reports to a Manager, Director, or Executive level position.
