Reporting Relationships:
The Sr. Systems Engineer position will report to the Sr. Manager, Enterprise Systems.

Our enterprise is a 24x7x365 on-line business that relies on technology infrastructure. The Sr. Systems Engineer is a senior role is critical to maintaining and expanding our enterprise system infrastructure including Linux servers, virtualization and storage. The Sr. Systems Engineer is a growth opportunity for career-minded and goal-oriented individuals. This role provides broad exposure to diverse technology platforms and is highly collaborative with other Information Technology professionals and business department customers. As such, the Sr. Systems Engineer will be challenged by designing new solutions, implementing solutions, and supporting our business with top-notch service.
The role will have two primary areas of responsibility:
· 70% of time allocated to designing and implementing new enterprise systems and solutions for multiple data centers, offices, and campuses
· 30% of time allocated to monitoring, supporting, and troubleshooting systems issues
The Sr. Systems Engineer will have primary responsibilities in managing and delivering hosting services for open-source platform technologies including the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP). The position will ensure that the corporation’s Redhat Linux environment and hosted applications on the platform are maintained according to industry best practices, are highly available, are secure, and are performing to service level expectations.
Responsibilities include:
· Provision and maintain Linux servers in multi-tiered, and highly available configurations
· Patch and maintain operating system and open source applications
· Batch automation of maintenance processes
· Ensure successful backups and recoverability of platforms
· Define and maintain security procedures and policies
· Leverage virtualization technologies for rapid deployment and efficient capacity/utilization management
· Performance monitoring, management and tuning of operating systems and applications
· Objectively evaluate new technology and technology standards considering competing criteria for developing future system capabilities
· Review and analyze new application-level requests, work with IT partners, vendors, and business leaders to understand system infrastructure needs
· Develop solutions and recommendations for business initiatives based on application requirements
· Triage high-level, cross-platform problems and analyze performance issues.
· Develop run-book documentation
· Train and mentor systems administrative staff on new technologies and standard operating procedures
· Develop expert understanding of existing data center, server, virtualization and storage design and configuration to anticipate emerging capacity and performance needs, security exposures, and mitigations for any of the aforementioned exposures
· Work closely with all IT departments, key vendor partners, and our business leaders.
· Utilize effective communication to consult business leadership by articulating benefits and risks of solutions to aid in business decision-making
· Demonstrate professionalism as a senior technologist helping to advance the maturity of the infrastructure team and the services provided to our customers
Requirements:
Bachelor of Science, Computer Science, or equivalent experience Minimum 7 years’ experience with Redhat Linux administration in a large environment including provisioning, configuration/deployment, patching and troubleshooting of Linux servers Active or completed training in RHCT, RHCE, RHCA, or similar IT certifications preferred Experience administering the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) stack and other open-source applications including Zend, Drupal, Alfresco and\or PostgreSQL. Knowledge of scripting – bash shell, Perl, or other Knowledge of networking protocols Knowledge of virtualization technologies, particularly VMware Knowledge of load-balancing, clustering and multi-tiered application architecture Experience with Redhat Satellite server a plus Experience with monitoring technologies, particularly Nagios Experience with configuration management via puppet a plus Experience supporting Linux alongside of a Windows environment is a plus Must be willing to work some weekend shifts in support of maintenance and participate in on-call rotation duties Excellent written and verbal communication; Must be able to thoroughly document implementations, modifications and removals
