Senior Tax Advisor - North Asia

Our Tax & Reporting team builds scalable and well-controlled processes to support timely and accurate financial, statutory reporting, and ensure compliance with regional and local tax regulations. We sit at the center of the business, partnering with leadership to support our strategy of making life easier for our millions of customers and allowing millions of drivers partners, courier partners and merchants to make money. You will work on all indirect tax initiatives and matters for Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Philippines and report to the APAC Indirect Tax Lead. You will work closely with the US & EMEA Tax team and other members of the tax and finance departments to lead tax planning, advisory, litigation, audit, tax technology and compliance review functions in the North Asia region, with a primary focus on indirect taxes. **The Impact You'll Have** 01. Be part of a cross-functional team that advises on new products and services in North Asia and the broader APAC region, working in a smart, innovative way to drive improvements to processes, controls and reporting across the region and across operations. 02. Assist with the management of challenging tax matters, including tax litigation and tax audits. 03. Help lead interaction and knowledge sharing of indirect tax and employment tax developments, communicating changes and impact in the APAC region to our HQ in San Francisco as well as the EMEA and LATAM mega regions, and working with collaborators to ensure implementation and compliance. 04. Be the in-house tax advisor on business transactions, especially those related to marketplace services. 05. Work on M&A transactions, including preparation / review of tax due diligence reports, SPA, tax indemnity documents and lead any post-deal action steps. 06. Work with external advisors and Uber’s global tax team to develop strategies for GST / VAT / JCT and other indirect taxes. 07. Keep up-to-date with current and future tax laws, regulations, and court decisions, ensuring the company remains compliant. 08. Help manage relationships with outside tax consultants, tax and regulatory authorities. 09. Work in a smart, innovative way to drive improvements to processes, controls and reporting across the region and across operations. 10. Collaborate with compliance & reporting and technology teams to ensure tax data is accurately recorded for audits and litigation. 11. Think strategically while overseeing day-to-day tax operations, identifying risks, and helping resolve tax disputes. 12. Prepare presentations and communicate complex tax matters in a clear and simple way to non-tax professionals. **The Experience You'll Bring** 01. Finance, accounting and/or law degree. 02. Strong indirect tax and/or employment tax experience for 7+ years in North Asia (other APAC experience is a plus) in law firms, Big 4 firms and/or industry. 03. Exposure to tax controversy, tax advocacy and accounting would be a plus. 04. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing, and high-growth organisation, and in developing and sustaining relationships with internal and cross-functional collaborators, as well as external tax advisors and tax authorities. 05. Open to challenging projects outside areas of experience or comfort zone. 06. Combination of external and in-house experience would be plus, with technology based/e-commerce sector experience strongly preferred. 07. Excellent project management and stakeholder management skills. Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts clearly. 08. Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work both independently and as part of a larger team. 09. Solid understanding of international indirect tax concepts, particularly as it relates to cross border services, marketplace/merchant relationships, and product roll-outs. 10. Solid experience in the management of indirect tax processes and controls with a comprehensive understanding of the overall tax environment in each country. 11. SOX compliance experience preferred.
