Family Description

Applied R&D (AR) consists of target-oriented research either with the goal of solving a particular problem / answering a specific question or for multi-discipline design, development, and implementation of hardware, software, and systems including maintenance support. Supplies techno-economic consulting to clients. AR work is characterised by its detailed and complex nature in order to systematically combine existing knowledge and practices to further developing and incrementally improving products, operational processes, and customer-specific feature development.

Subfamily Description

General R&D Management (GRM) comprises the management of the engineering organisation which includes development and revision of new and existing products or services. Covers monitoring of different engineering dimensions and priority setting and conflict resolution between the different organisational dimensions (if any). Contains formulation of long-term objectives, implementation of policies, and monitoring of engineering budget and development schedule. Comprises optimisation of product delivery and involvement in patent search, technology surveillance, technology trends, and is main contributor in innovation management of the company.

 

Impact

Impact is short to medium term and influences business unit results and/or customer relationships. Accountable for setting function/program goals, managing cost performance and ensuring achievement through people and processes. Decisions and actions will normally impact business, program, project, function. Predominant authority for development of new products, processes, standards or operational plans based upon business strategy. 

Scope & Contribution

Individual Contributor: Typically highest level of individual contributor in job family. Demonstrates strategic thinking, assumes broad perspective. Designs and/or develops original programs, projects, content for functional subject areas. Manages implementation/utilization through other organisation resources. Authorised to take decisions within responsibility area. Managerial/Supervisory: Typically third (occasionally second) level of solid line management. Knowledge & Experience

Typically requires 12+ years extensive relevant experience and/or a graduate / postgraduate equivalent degree. PhD degree would normally be expected in R&D stream.Senior leader and strategic thinker with experience in business management and leadership of large cross-functional units. Strong influencing skills, with established relationships at senior and officer level (CxO) executivesProven track record in delivering strong financial results in key projectsLeadership, influencing, and facilitation skills. Highly organized with strong focus on driving resultsMust be able to work in a fast paced, results oriented organization where leadership, teamwork and commitment to execution are essentialMust be strong in ‘C/C++’ and data structures. Protocol development preferably, wireless experience, such as development on SMF/UPF, GGSN, PGW/SGW is added advantage. Familiarity with IP network protocols. Familiarity with UNIX based and real-time operating systems.Experience in debugging and maintaining control plane software. 

Sustain and increase the high-performance of the Packet Core Engineering global software development organization, showing y-o-y improvements in quality, productivity, morale, customer satisfaction.
